He gives the most organized lecture at uoft, with very clear logic and easy to follow. Great introductory prof in comparative politics. Made me decided to enroll in Contemporary Asian Studies. The textbook written by himself is AMAZING.

he provided the introduction of Southeast politics and history in an interesting way! before I took this course i knew NOTHING AT ALL about Southeast Asia but his lecture & textbook was quite straightforward. Test was a bit confusing and required 2 essays to write.

Comment:
his class was a great introduction to politics on the other side of the world. there is a fair bit of history involved in this politics class but I found that to be enjoyable. He's a good speaker and the content is engaging, can be long-winded though. He also made you buy his book... which was only kind of useful. tip: find it second hand

Comment:
Knowledgeable but incredibly uninspiring. He takes democracy to be an assumed endpoint, instead of allowing students to come to their own conclusions. Skims over a highly diverse region by oversimplifying histories and creating tropes. Exudes arrogance; he doesn't bother to pronounce countrypolitical leaders'party names properly. His bookuseless

Professor Bertrand, although extremely intelligent, he was very awkward and unapproachable. In the seminar course, there was not enough formal discussion. I found the learning experience to be very poor.

Greatest Prof! Bertrand was clear and very organized with powerpoint slides in all his lectures. He made the course interesting by providing little clips and photos within the slides. This made it easy to take notes and easy to understand :)

straight, to the point, TONS of extra visual aids to illustrate his lectures. one of the rare profs who can use power point without reading off word-for-word. tons of fun. loved the accent.

Powerpoint led lectures that helped note taking. Enthusiastic and knowledgable about his half of the course. Only drawbak was the early morning classes.. hard to stay awake.

Well structured and clear lectures. Utilizes different types of media in his lectures which makes it much more interesting. Posts his powerpoint notes online, then adds a great deal to them in lecture. A decent prof all around.

Perhaps the least helpful and least interesting prof at the school. Reading pp slides IS NOT TEACHING. Oh, and his assingments were poorly set and badly graded.

Bertrand is the most boring professor, if not person, at U of T. Hence, a potentially interesting course is also very dull. Moreover, the midterm exam is poorly structured in that it focuses too specificly on certain readings, thus losing the big picture.

He is pretty clear and engaging, and occasionally humorous. I find, however, that sometimes his monotone voice can be something of a detriment.
