Comment:
Dr. Birchler is honestly a very kind and caring man. However, his teaching is not wonderful, and his tests are quite awful if you do not have access to old exams. Get the old exams and you will pass this class easily. Study the old tests but study the new material as well since not every question is the same as the old exam.

A bit monotone but quite the character; never fails to surprise. One of the most respected professors at MU. You'll be glad you took a class with this legend! Some of the most memorable lectures I've had. His blue book is a true gift; literally all the info needed for exams. Willing to curve grades if you participate & show effort/improvement!

Dr. Birchler is AWESOME. His class is interesting, he makes a boring topic fun. I never missed his class because I wanted to be there. His tests are difficult but very straight forward. He gives a study guide and there are never any surprises on his exams. There are old exams online that are similar so if you do take the course look over old exams

Dr. Birchler is great and always willing to help. Study the blue book and nothing else. That was a little nerve-wracking for me, but I got 90 and above on every test and you usually only need a 65-75 for an A. If you don't understand everything in the blue book, go to office hours. As long as you just memorize the blue book, it's an easy A.

You definitely have to work for a good grade in this class. Get his blue book at study it! He throws a surprise in there every once in a while, but for the most part everything comes from that blue book. His lectures are a little confusing if you're not paying complete attention.

I don't know why people don't like him. He is very helpful and so are the TA's. They answer emails all night before an exam. The tests are not hard at all if you just follow the study guide. He will never give you a question that is not on the study guide. What more can you ask for.

This class is awful. Dr. Birchler tries to make it interesting but he talks so monotone and still uses the overhead projector from elementary school. Tests are HARD. TA's don't help. Take this class with a different professor if you want an A.

Lectures are really boring. Going to lecture isn't even required to do well on tests. But, you should go to know if you're in the "big 12" or not. You need to know EVERYTHING in the blue book, know how to do all RSD problems, follow the study guide and know all the definitions in each "study questions Test # Whatever and you'll get an A!

He is rediculously intellegent and tries to make it interesting, however his voice is rather boring. Read the blue book like the bible and it will help you. I would say he is affraid to give A's. Went to his office seven times to fight for my A, and never got it, deffantly deserved it, you will need to study hard core for exams to do well at all.

Fell asleep in lecture once or twice and I'm a good student. He dresses up like Mendel and tries to make things interesting. His voice makes you pass out though. Go to rsd. Do what the blue notebook says like it's the bible. Tests are graded with a HARD hand, quite frustrating. The TAs are frightened to give us partial credit for frear of Birchler.

Birchler is a great guy, and a great researcher, but his lectures put most students to sleep. I went to all the classes, but I never felt as if I gained much from going. His tests are not hard, but they are really tricky - you get everything you need to know for the tests in the notebook. Virtually no student-prof interaction. Go to RSD!

Already graduated and heading to med school. Still remember Genetics with Bircher as my hardest biology class in undergrad. Goes really fast, assigns lots of problems. Felt like I just memorized stuff without ever understanding. Wonderful man, but horrible teacher. Go the TAs for help!

Dr Birchler is an extremly caring man who is more interested in his students learning, than his own ego. The things he does to help his points sink into his students is commendable.

He can be a funny guy, but mostly, he's extremely boring. Everything is right out of the notebook, so going to class is worthless. Be prepared to memorize more info than you ever thought possible. It's a hard class, but if you study, you'll be fine.
