He's very intelligent and very helpful, and he teaches everything clearly (though he constantly calls on you for comments, which can be annoying, especially when you know nothing about music). However, he does make the class much more diffult than he probably should and grades hard. You'll have to show up to all the classes and study a fair amount.

Really tough class. Four or five really long papers. Tests were difficult and focused on listening to pieces. I thought having an interest in music would help me and make me enjoy the class, but it didn't at all. He's really passionate about the subject and is really good at playing the piano, but classes are boring and he calls on you all the time

I'm not going to lie. This guy is absolutely smart. He knows everything and anything about music history. With that said, he wants you to think the same way he does. He is a very demanding teacher who wants sooooooo much detail. He ripped apart my essays like a football playbook. I'm glad I got rid of this requirement, but avoid taking him!!

initially intimidating, but really a nice guy. class can get boring but he is a wonderful pianist, passionate about music. he is tough but thats b/c he knows students are capable of more and challanges u. take him if u enjoy intelligent professors, don't if u r lazy & prefer sleeping to stimulation

I knew nothing about music but the class is mostly memoriztion and writing papers(four in it's not extremely difficult.He is a fair grader.However he is really boring in class and he calls on you all the time...especially if u dont volunteer. The class isnt totally easy, but its very bearable

Fr. Boyce is an amazing professor and pianist. He is extrememly knowledgeable about his field. He is also very helpful and personable, but a somewhat tough grader. I would recommend him to anyone who has an interest in music.

A DARN good piano player who will dazzle with talents.He won't dazzle you with his how easy grading tho. Class is actually hard don't take it if u just want an easy elective. Kinda snobby but a good teacher, tries hard and is nice when you show effort. U Must practice at least an hr a week to pass

Father Boyce...oh how i loathe thee. this guy is so boring, he put me to sleep every morning with his damn lullabys on his piano...loves to hear himself talk and play piano. knows his stuff but is so hard! 2 ten page papers and IMPOSSIBLE midtermandfinal

Although Boyce is incredibly intelligent, he can be condescending to the students. He can make you nervous if you are unclear about a certain theory/playing music, and although he is nice, he can be narrow minded and stubborn.
