Absolutely would never take again. Not only were the lectures boring, confusing, and not useful, his marking style was incoherent. It would take him forever to get grades back and when he did, he wouldnt explain his reasoning. Completely scatterbrained and he took something interesting and turned it into one of the worst classes Ive taken.

Awful prof. His assignment guidelines are unclear and he constantly contradicts his written guidelines with what he verbally says in class. Lots of spelling and grammar errors in his guidelines as well. He knows lots about what he is teaching, but his execution is poor and marking is insanely tough. No notes posted, all verbal, lots of pop quizzes.

James Linville is an AMAZING professor. I have taken quite a few courses with him and I have always enjoyed them. He is a tough marker, but incredibly fair. He will give you in-depth feedback that will help you in ALL your classes. I credit this professor with much of my success in university, especially in the way of how to write for university.

Had Linville for 3 classes now and all are the same format. His lectures can be sort of dry, but all arguments are backed up with scholarly evidence. His jokes are lame, but make the class more interesting. Very will to talk in his office or over email. His exams are difficult because there are soo many terms to know. Pay attention and read texts.

Linville is a great professor. He always backs up his arguments with solid, scholarly proof. He can be a hard marker, but if you apply his corrections you will be a better writer from it. Prior biblical knowledge will not help you, for he marks based on scholarly evidence, NOT personal religious beliefs. Awesome prof!

I've had him for 3+ classes. He can be a tough marker but he wants you to succeed. If you take note of his criticisms your writing will improve drastically. He's extremely helpful outside of class and he's always willing to help. Great professor.

Professor was excellent. Loves what he teaches. Encouraged discussion and was always there if you needed help or wanted to discuss marks/chat. Class would be tough if you didn't attend the lectures or do the readings, he is very fair and clear about what he expects. Great Prof.

Doesn't seem very interested in class. Slides very disorganized. Take notes in class, but go through the textbook and take your own as well. Cross-reference them and the ones that double up are the things that are important. Teaches only the Western religions portion of the course. Thank God. (no pun intended)

This was the worst class i have ever taken. It was his first year teaching biblw survey just talked to whole time and had nothing to back up his lecture with. Very hard to understand what you are supposed to retain. Terrrrrible marker, very unfair and picks favourtites. I would not recommend anyone to take a class from him ever. Boring Lectures!

Weird guy. Picks favorites and expects his students to be his best friends. Helpful if you go talk to him and he has cookies. He is moody and seems to hate religion. Wish I hadn't taken his class.

he's halarious and makes it interesting! for those who get religiously offended really easily... maybe you should reconsider, but his classes are not meant to convert you, it's a LECTURE and it's about his research, not a sermon.

Take this class with those who wrote the textbook, not Dr. Linville and Dr Harding. There have been 6 exams. Each one takes about an hour simply just to click the buttons and submit. Midterm was out of 175 and a 2 hour exam. Each time the class meets the expectations of the prof, the tests are called "too easy" and made harder. Final = 268mrks / 3h

My favourite Religious Studies prof yet. So long as you're willing to put in the effort and actually pay attention during class, it's very easy to get a good grade. I've been given the opportunity to show my creativity and sense of humor in his courses and have not been disappointed whatsoever with the resulting grades.

Hebrew Bible Introduction has very interesting material, confusing, perplexing, but interesting nonetheless. Dr. Linville truly enjoys and knows the course material but his teaching style is a little disorganized and humor is sometimes misplaced. He's a little stingy on the marks in order to push students. This not a GPA boosting course.

I am currently studying for a final exam with Linville, and let me tell you---GOOD LUCK! He is definintely the worst prof I've had in religious studies. Sure he's a nice guy, but if you're looking to do well, this is NOT the course for you.
