He is the professor that will send you into tears of laughter, but his tests are on the tougher side. The tests get a lot of time though, so do not worry about being a slow test taker.

Melcher is extremely funny making it hard not to pay attention to his zany lectures. He also gives ample opportunities for extra credit raising your grade by a total of 25 points! Can be easily sidetracked, but still fun. Assigns readings but I have never opened the book and I'm getting a B.

Professor Melcher cares about his students and his subject. He wants everyone to learn to he doesn't just give out grades. One of the most fair graders I have had, and he justifies his grades so there is no question. It actually made me proud to get good grades in his class because I knew I had earned it

Melcher explains clearly, and he challenges his class. He doesn't go for the low-hanging fruit when choosing topics for lecture. It's because he's not afraid, using his enormous knowledge, of penetrating a student's potential confusion surrounding difficult subject-matter. He really thrusts his full effort into teaching. I am one satisfied student!

Melcher's class was always the brightest highlight of my week. He is an absolutely hilarious loveable goofball. Lectures are hyperactive & energetic & he always winds up with an untucked shirt by class end. Lectures are fun & tests are quite easy. Expect a few presentations. However be prepared 4 the final unlike tests it is mostly book reading.

He knows a lot about the subject, and you can get him really sidetracked easily by asking him questions about anything Political Science related. He spent an entire class period talking about the Electoral College completely unplanned, so he can pretty much come up with a lecture right on the spot.

Professor Melcher is one of the most intelligent, resourceful, and insightful professors I have ever had. Along with Professor Beck and Erb, UMF's Political Science department offers the best possible education in Government home and abroad and Political Theory.

Dr. Melcher is a great professor in that he knows and lives his field, is hilariously entertaining, and welcomes viewpoints of all stripes in class. He takes time to really know his students and takes interest in their endeavors well beyond graduation. He's also a genuinely good man. If you go to UMF, taking a class with Dr. Melcher is a must.

I have taken most of the classes at UMF that Melcher offers that I did not already take at the school I transfered from. Jim has great energy and his classroom manner can pull anyone out of a bad mood with his jokes. His classes should be a must at UMF.

Jim Melcher knows his American government, as it's the only class I had with him. I thought his class was easy but my friend found difficulties with his grading/requirements. He teaches at an intro level but background US politics knowledge makes the class a breeze for the most part.
