Shakespeare Tragedies was epic; Savage is brilliant and insightful, as well as funny and engaging. Class comprised of reading quizes (but a meagre 55 is an A) and two final papers. Will talk your ear off in his office. Highly recommended.

Just a fantastic professor. Great personality and wit, and obviously incredibly brilliant about his subject. Much ado is made about his quizzes, but they're there to encourage close readings. Not hard to get an A on them (55% and up) if you do indeed read each play twice. Can't recommend a professor more. It was an honor to have a class with him.

He's my favorite professor. He stimulates incredible discourse, making you want to really churn the wheels in your head and contribute to the conversation. He's hilarious; I never missed a class because it was just so fun. People say he's hard, but if you do the readings when you're supposed to, you'll be fine.

Prof. Savage is really eccentric, but really funny, and the man knows Shakespeare like nobody's business. That being said, his quizzes might be some of the most difficult assignments I've had at the college. He asks about very specific details. There are also only two papers. Class discussions are interesting, so recommended for English majors.

Savage is hilarious, brilliant, and demanding. He gave regular reading quizzes for the assigned plays; they were insanely specific, but 55% is an A, and he drops the lowest. Hard grader on papers, but if you ask, he'll tell you what he wants. The entire grade was the reading quizzes (~40-45%) and a 10 to 12-page paper (55-60%). Worth taking.

What to say about Professor Savage... he was really nice during office hours and is a genuinely interesting guy, but he is very hard to follow in class and engages in impossible debates with students that seem irrelevant to the subject. I recommend going into his office hours to discuss paper outlines because he makes it clear what he likes.

The quizzes will eat you alive. Professor Savage is very dominant in class discussion and will often interrupt students who are speaking. But he is a brilliant man. You will learn a lot from him. He's also a hard but fair grader. Take his Shakespeare class if you like a challenge (but don't imply Shakespeare might've put some gay subtext in plays.)

All the comments on here are admiring, but my classmates and I didn't care for him all that much. He's certainly smart and knows his stuff, but he can dominate the discussions (in an uncomfortable way) & is sometimes overly critical. I found him to be unhelpful & not very understanding at times. Could just be me, but I plan on not taking him again.

His lectures are amazing! he is so brilliant and I was constantly engaged and interested! Take him! His quizzes are hard and aim for getting at around a 65% for each--that's an A!

He brings so much knowledge to class, you're hit with a tornado. Sure, he can say the same thing seventy times, but he can pull you to the point from fifty different directions. Discussion is interesting; to your benefit to banter with him, he loves it when you challenge his authority. Reading the books is a must; beware quizzes and summarizing.

Savage is awesome. His quizzes are tough, but a 65% on a quiz is an A. Open to different opinions but will put you in your place if you say something completely off the wall. Great professor, interesting lectures.

I'm very conflicted about how I feel about Savage. He's totally an ****, has the most absurd expectations for quizzes (even lies about when they're going to be), and takes FOREVER to get to his point. However, he's also brilliant; I was consistently left in awe of him.

"Old guard" is right! Savage is fired up and terribly intelligent. Lectures are much more interesting in his small classes where students debate, so argue your point! Quizzes seem picky, but are vital info to know. Papers held to highest standards, but he is available to help guide. Must take Savage! One of W&M's best

the best that the w&m english department has to offer. savage is a knowledgeable lecturer whose enthusiasm for the subject matter is really apparent. grades are mostly based on 2 long papers. yes, he has high expectations, but he's very clear about how to get a good grade and is available to critique paper ideas. don't hesitate to take this class.

Funny guy. Likes to joke around with students but in a way that makes some feel bullied -- he WILL make fun of you. Tough grader. He knows his****, you will learn from him.
