Dr. Furman is caring, and incredibly knowledgeable. She is notoriously critical when reviewing your submissions, but if you are in it to improve your writing instead of just coasting through, she is most helpful. I was already a strong writer in terms of composition, and she challenged me considerably. I thank her for doing so.

I was really excited about this class and I loved Jan, so don't get me wrong, but this class wasn't easy. I put a lot of time and effort into the class and it felt like my papers and written exams were never good enough. I turned in all of my assignments on time(papers due every week) and barely got a B in the class.

Prof. Furman is very enthusiastic for this class. She definitely enjoys what she's teaching and she wants others to see what she sees. You do have to essentially say what she wants to hear for some things, but she's pretty easy to please. Just talk about the readings and pay attention to what she says about them and you'll be fine.

One of the most sincere and helpful people I have ever met on campus. She treats you, not like a student, but like an academic peer so expects you to comment and write well. She is very modest although she is an excellent professor. If you 're confused about anything, just ask for help, and she is always there. So lucky to have met her!

As a person, Jan is great. As an instructor, she leaves much to be desired. Never had anyone play favorites the way she does. Her assignments are vague so that students can make them authentic but she never really explains this in class. A hard grader, a poor lecturer, cannot lead a discussion. Leaves no room for interpretation that is not her own.

This was a strange class. I would make a comment and she would disregard it. 5 minutes later another girl would make the same comment and it was like it was mana from heaven. She has favorites. The ironic thing is the other student would make **** comments about her while she lectured. So much for an ethnic lit course.

At first I wasn't sure how the class was going to go, but after you get to know her she is very helpful. If you have any questions, email her. She is always there to help students and is very open in doing so.

Grading was tough but fair-- her comments on papers did a good job of explaining why I got the grade I got. As this was an interdisciplinary course, I was a bit disappointed at the overwhelming focus on literature but it's her field, so that's understandable. Seemed a little out of her depth when discussing history. Some students knew more.

She is definatly not the best teacher U of M has to offer. First assignment she didn't even grade. It said that I was too general and didn't refer to the text enough, yet I refered to the text several times in a three page paper and she didnt give specific guidelines for the assignment. Lectures are terrible and the information in them is as "gene

Terrible! I've never taken a class with so many awkward silences. She seems incapable of leading a discussion, and instead just poses really vague questions and waits for someone in class to get sick of the silence and answer. It's not a hard class, but it's horribly boring.

This professor is AWFUL!!! She opened the class saying that "in literature there are no rights and wrongs" then grades on her OWN OPINION and almost never gives A's. If you want to be frustrated beyond all means and feel miserable for an entire semester- then maybe this is the class for you. DON'T TAKE HER!

Every day that I walk into this class, I get a splitting headache. I am a literature lover, but I despise this class. The professor is vague on her assignments, grades according to HER personal opinion, and allows the people in the class to ramble on and on for a full hour and fifteen minutes. It is a waste of time!

Great class.. I didn't totally want to take it because I thought I didn't need it, but I'd had one of her classes before and enjoyed it. Anyway, I ended up learning a lot, and Dr. Furman was always helpful and very interesting. I would take one of her classes again.

The worst teacher I ever had. I've never seen a teacher play favorites like her. I never knew what to expect from her. Got into an hour long arguement about a paper once. Would twist everything she said to make it sound like I never knew what I was talking about (even if she would confirm that I did). If I could go back in time I'd drop her class.

She does play favorites and thinks her interpretation is the only interpretation. The class is not impossible though but she tends to grade hard.

She is a really great person, and really knows her stuff. She gives clear guidelines on what she expects- but sometimes it is difficult to meet her expectations. Also, in matters of interpretation of literature sometimes it seems like her interpretation is the only one. Great teacher overall!

I just love this Lady. I had her for three classes(even though I was a computer science major). She it very intelligent and sincere. I learned so much from her, and with graduation here, I will miss her greatly. With her help, I developed a great love for the art of Literature. Not having her anymore, is the saddest part of leaving U of M for me.

If you listened, it was not difficult to understand what Dr. Furman wanted in class. She is very intelligent and caring, and knows her subject matter well. Do not judge her by the first few days of class. She made me love authors I had never before read, and I had a great time learning from her.
