Comment:
Westpheling can be intimidating, for sure. I think everyone (save maybe one dude, who just, bless him, kept screwing up) ended up with A's, so your grade is okay, but she seems to make decisions about everyone early on. Volunteer to go early, make sure you can talk about the figures and discussion, and be interested. Cool class, though!

She is extremely smart but i feel she was a bit degrading and would make me feel stupid. she was also intimidating but i feel like shes a good teacher to get to know on the side and if she likes you she would make an excellent recommendation letter. you have to read A LOT i spent a good 6 hours each week reading the papers she assigned

Dr. Westpheling is a tough professor. She is very aggressive and intimidating at times. Her teaching method is unique and she force you to do a lot of work in this class. As long as you are prepared to take a tough class and do a lot of homework you can handle it.

Terrible teacher. She thinks that her opinion is the ONLY opinion, and GENE3200H is a DISCUSSION-BASED CLASS. Her criticism is so derogatory.

Very demanding professor. Make sure to read before each lecture. She will drill the class until some one answers correctly. Expects understanding of concepts prior to lectures. Her test questions are often vague and tests overall are difficult. Very knowledgeable and good professor but difficult.

Really tough material. She really seems to know the material, but she explains the information like you already know all about it so I usually had to teach myself from the book. The tests are really hard, but the way it as graded was really helpful for your grade. The class was curved, so if you're with the average you'll be fine.

DO NOT TAKE GENETICS WITH THIS PROFESSOR!!!......There usually are two other teachers teaching this course with her, Dr.Kissinger, and it was Dr. Jenson, but he resigned. They don't post notes on webCt, nor will they slow down in class to take notes. Exams are extremely hard. Class avg was a 65, but there is a curve.

Ditto what the person beneath me said. She makes you feel stupid if you don't already have a graduate level understanding of genetics, which makes you not want to ask questions or seek help. The lecture outlines given online are mostly just figures from the book; I felt the book taught me the material better than being in class did. Not easy!

This professor is VERY challenging. However, she really knows the material and wanted us to do well in the class. This summer session class moved very quickly and it was hard to keep up, but the curve at the end helped people a lot. Supposedly this class helps a lot on the MCAT so the challenge may be worth it...

Westpheling was difficult, but that is how school is supposed to be. When I started grad school at UGA, I was shocked at how easy the courses were - easier than most of my undergrad courses. Westpheling was the first prof. to really challenge me at UGA.
