Very nice person, but kind of a mess. Required short response papers every week, but about 80% of them weren't graded until the very end of the semester. It was unclear what the assigned readings for each lecture were until a couple days before the lecture. The prof does a lot of talking and tells a lot of stories and lectures aren't very organized

Lectures are ok but I learned from this class that ethics is NOT my thing, too many dry texts and endless boring readings that you have to write long responses to every week. Derstine is a hot mess but a fun one. I once sent her a long, long email begging for an extension and she just replied "Ok". No punctuation even. It was kind of hilarious.

I only took this class because of the SAS Core, but I really liked her as a person. I felt like I became a more well-rounded and open-minded person after listening to her for the semester. I did feel like her class was a lot of work though; we would read chapters/articles and answer questions, but you really need to be thorough to get a good grade.

She's a great teacher and her lectures are easy to follow. As long as you pay attention in class and do the readings, you will do well in her class. She is also very approachable and will help you to the best of her abilities.

Lots of in-class discussions, the topics are very interesting. Professor is very open-minded and respects your opinion, even if she doesn't agree. Assignments are doable if you've been doing the readings. Weekly readings & forum posts. Attendance is mandatory, 1 midterm paper and a final paper but she grades fairly, just make sure you put in effort

By far the worst professor I have had at this school. The homework is utterly useless, you won't learn ANYTHING of value, and all she does is talk about herself. Cant tell her lefts from rights let alone how to run an actual college class. Honestly very surprised she still has a job with just how poorly she ran this class.

Best class I have ever taken! Her homework is only really relevant to help understand what she talks about in class, and grade comes from HW and a group project. You do have to show up as she does take attendance, but this class is easy so long as you do the HW. She was amazing and def knows a lot about what she talks about. Best prof ever )

This course, Topics in Philosophy, Criminal Justice & Marginalized Groups was an eye-opener. Prof. Derstine addresses a broad scope of dilemmas plaguing the community of people of color, the class was very informative and I believe resulted in enlightening & making me more sensitive/compassionate. Reading /writing heavy.

This class was very confusing to me. The material had the potential to be extremely engaging however the lack of organization and tangents in class made it less inticing. We had to do a ridiculous amount of discussion posts each week but they were fairly straightforward. Not super difficult.

She's really funny and really crazy. She takes attendance which is ridiculous because we didn't really do much in class. All you needed to do to successfully pass is read the textbook and do the homework from it. Exams were straight out of the textbook as well.

If you want to take a class where you teach yourself more than the professor does, take it. This way this class is run is just poor management.

People underrate her, she really tries hard to teach and cuts kids a lot of slack, learned a decent amount in her class, and enjoyed her company

not that bad. if you dont like cursing or liberal views, dont take her class. however, theres no final & she gives you plenty of chances to make up for bad grades. not too hard to get an "a"

Tries sincerely to help students. Engages them too. Interesting material, but syllabus wasn't followed. Opinionated, smart, and funny, but came to class late several times. Overall, good course, and work assigned is more than minimal, but fair.
