I found her lectures incredibly hard to follow and for an introductory course this class almost caused me not to major in biology. I tried to study from the text, but didn't do any better on her tests and could never figure out what she was using for the course material. Lab was easy and you were allowed to leave as soon as you were done.

Comment:

Professor Hughes is the BEST. The lectures are pretty boring, but she always throws in a couple of jokes or random fun facts or demonstrations to liven in up some. She does talk very fast though and gives tests that require lots of studying. She is extremely helpful in lab and lets you leave as soon as you finish instead of holding you hostage.

Professor Hughes is absolutely wonderful! She is great with clearing up any confusion and she is so approachable and sweet. Labs are short and straight to the point. Lectures can be long, but she always has a funny story to tell that helps you remember the material and have a little laugh. BEST BIO TEACHER AT UMW!!

There are nothing but WONDERFUL things to be said about Professor Hughes. Her lectures are usually very interesting, she will explain things as many times as you need her to, she cuts out trivial lab exercises and tries to let you out as early as possible. Tests require studying and are lecture based, but her class is by no means difficult.

Professor Hughes is one of the nicest professors I've had so far. She is great and explaining things and is very patient. Her tests are hard, but by no means impossible. If you study the notes, you will do fine.

She's such a doll! Really loves what she does, lets you outta lab as soon as you're done. She's clear on her lectures & asks if you want her to go over anything if you don't understand it the first time. Tests based on lecture, book helps some. Therefore you should always go to class. She's so sweet!! Almost like a grandma :)

She makes biology sooo much easier than it really needs to be. a lotta kids i know were struggling with Bio cuz they had different teachers and i honestly did not know why- i was like bio's easy guys! haha its Dr. Hughes who makes it easy! lil to no work required,study a bit here and there and your good to go. MUCH easier than chemistry

She's one of the best teachers I've ever had. Tries to make every thing simple, for the non-bio major to understand. She never keeps you in the lab for the full time, and her tests are simple and straight forward. Go to lectures and take notes, you dont even need a book for the class. SHE IS AMAZING! TAKE HER! Trust me, her tests are NOT HARD AT ALL! They are the most straightforward questions you can possibly think of! Labs are always about 1 h shorter than normal and a 2 year old could ace her lab quizzes! Not to mention she is a very sweet person! Always willing to help! She can be funny, too! Hughes is a really great teacher, no joke. Her tests are not easy, they deff. need studying. This is probably the best advice anyone will give you, go buy a recorder and record her lectures and listen to them before the test. It made the difference of getting a 78 or 90 for me. She is very enthusiastic about biology and manages to make lectures decently interesting. Always willing to help, especially if you show the effort, sometimes has repeat lectures, and encourages questions if you don't understand something. Lecture-based class, definitely. So full of energy! She loves the subject and her students. Sometimes she'll repeat lectures (which are optional to attend but very helpful). You NEVER use the book. A big note taking class. She will go out of her way to help you understand something and welcomes questions. She makes it very easy if you take advantage of extra one on one time.

The tests I've taken thus far have covered material from the notes as well as material from the text that she didn't go over in lecture. Just go to class and take good notes. She repeats important concepts. Friendly, helpful, and very intelligent. Labs are enjoyable and no lab write-ups! Just quizzes that are supposed to help your grade.
