I took Introduction to Drama Studies with Professor Cleveland and she is so awesome! Even though she was a bit of a tough grader and a little savage at times, I found that she made the material relevant to us and I learned so much more about drama that I didn't know before.

Extremely tough marker. In person, can come across as rude and condescending--doesn't seem to want to help her students at all. She is very knowledgeable about what she teaches but she wastes her lectures talking politics & Trump the majority of time. Good choice of readings but often she's not so great at explaining them herself.

Caring and inspirational. She talks about real issues and is very relatable. I find her grading criteria to be unclear; she would often contradict what the syllabus says. One of the hardest markers I have ever had (and I was a third year taking her second year course). Be prepared for a lower mark, no matter how hard you try. Hope for an easy TA.

I absolutely adore Professor Cleveland. She's a lot of fun and genuinely cares about her student. She can be a tough marker but this is offset by the amount of help that she is willing to give you. If you don't like working for a grade, this isn't the class for you.

If you are taking theory with this prof, be prepared to write 5 papers in the first four weeks of class - Then you can breathe and focus on one final assignment. She is very caring about her students but comes across as arrogant in her lectures. Very inconsistent marker - but she rewards great ideas, so take time to develop your thesis-PARTICIPATE!

Professor Cleveland remains one of the loveliest teachers and human beings I have ever encountered. She cares deeply about her students, and makes sure to teach literary theory (a subject which has the potential to be very, very dull) in a way that makes it real, even relevant, to us. Lots of writing assignments, but they're great fun. No exams.

Difficult marker, not very consistent with grading. Lectures are never a consistent length, but she rants for most of the class. Not a great teacher -- gets you to read too much, but doesn't teach the material herself. Not particularly clear. A bit self-righteous

Prof Cleveland is an absolute pleasure. Carleton is lucky to have her on the roster. She makes critical theory both enjoyable and accessible. She's an absolute sweetheart, and truly cares about her students and what they think. Take her class!

I had her for women and literature and she is amazing! Yes, at first she is intimidating but as you get to know her and her teaching style, she will blow you away! Easily the best English prof at Carleton. Her lectures are incredible! She made me fall in love with Woolf---enough said?

Ridiculously hard marker, her perception of a good mark was quite different then my own. Found her very nice and informative, but this help didn't translate into a grade improvement.

I had Theories of Sexuality with Prof. Cleveland and the course material I learned in that class has stuck with me for life. She is so radical and wonderful. She takes everything you know about sexuality and spins it 180 degrees. She is so brilliant that it is shocking. PS: Profs that give away easy marks are bunk so I am glad she wasn't like this.

Did not enjoy a class which, being about Comedy and Satire, should have been at least a little fun. Found her lecture style very condescending somehow, she always had to be right and would shut down students ideas. Hard marker and her expectations from assignments were not clear, prolly would have done better by regurgitating her opinion.

Comment:
Taking genre, sexuality and literature is not sex literature. The books are graphic and she expects everyone to be okay with it. I agree that she doesn't like to be proved wrong. There is a lot of class discussion but gets off topic a lot. Not sure I'm learning anything.

She is awesome! Very engaging and interesting in lectures/discussions. You can tell she is very passionate about the subject. You absolutely must be prepared for class, or be prepared for a verbal assault. She can be a bit tough but I think she means well; I was very surprised that I got an A.

Very interesting course and a fun class! Prof knew her history and was very helpful. Read the text and be prepared for class and it'll run smoothly, if not be prepared for some reprimanding. Cleveland isn't very generous with A's.
