Really good teacher, very knowledgable! His lectures are interesting and tests aren't too bad. There is an oral report but it's actually not that bad. Just show up, study, and ask questions.

Dr. Van Hook is an outstanding professor. Be prepared to come to class. Attendence is taken. However, Dr. Van Hook's jovial teaching style will make you want to come to class. Moderately hard, but worth the effort. An "A" is possible with effort, but the class is worth taking simply because of Dr. Van Hook.

His tests aren't hard at all but there are only two of them. He likes pop quizzes and gets very specific with the questions he asks but they aren't worth very much of your grade anyways. There is also a presentation on either Plato or Rorty.

Awesome guy, very knowledgeable...very open-minded. Takes all kinds of criticism of all the Christian philosophers (if that's not a contradition in terms). Great guy, take him

Grading system for all his classes is 95% for a full A, which is intimidating but not impossible. His tests weren't hard if you knew the stuff, but quizzes were pretty hard and unannounced. There is an oral report on Plato's the republic. He offered a chance for extra credit.

Very interesting! Uses the plus/minus grading scale so an A is a 95%. Take thorough notes and read the material before class b/c he likes pop quizzes. There are 2 tests and a final, plus a Plato presentation. Offered extra credit too. YOU CAN'T MISS CLASS!! Show up, work hard, and you will do well.

Very nice instructor. most classes are lectures, amt of discussion depends on the group. Interesting subject, and he sticks to what each philosopher says w/o including too much of his own opinion. Tests relative to hard material. Overall great class to take - esp if you need an honors class.

Dr. Van Hook is a gentleman and a scholar. He brings warmth and intelligence to philosophy. For all of those undergraduates interested in Richard Rorty (and I know there are tons!), consult Van Hook. He's arguably the foremost Rortarian in FL. Cheers.

A lot to learn in this class! Be prepared, he loves to hear himself talk! Take notes, and you must read handouts (book isnt necessary!) , and you can get an A!! Class would have been a lot more interesting if it wasn't so damn early 3 times a week!

Great professor! Loves what he's talking about. I looked forward to taking his class each time. Taken him 3 times so far. Tests are a bit difficult. Three keys to getting a good grade in his class: Go to class, do the readings, take good notes. A+ Prof.
