Gerlach was an interesting professor. While class was certainly very interesting and informative, the material covered did not appear on the test. That being said, the tests were based almost solely off the book, so if you read the book and go over his practice tests, you're fine. Too bad he's gone.

Well, I do not think he was a great teacher. As some other posters pointed out, he makes the subject interesting. Gerlach, though, did not really teach material covered on the test so going to lecture was pointless except for the market simulation. I would say that pretty much if you read the textbook and do the practice test problems, you shoul

He does an excellent job of explaining concepts that are not always immediately obvious if you've never had econ before. His examples are interesting, and I really liked this class.

Can't believe he wasn't granted tenure! Able to convey important concepts while remaining completely engaging - the Econ department desperately needs more like him. One of my favorite professors and I'll be sad to see him go.

I cant believe he didnt get tenure. Great teacher. Clear notes and examples. Skim the book to emphasize what was taught in class and do the practice tests. Honestly, a great teacher.

I love Jeff Gerlach! It's too bad we're losing him to MIT. :( I did not get a good grade in his class, but my fault, not his -- his lectures are clear (and he even lets you print them out!), he's very hepful w/ questions, and his tests aren't too hard--just study the review tests he provides and you'll be fine. I have Haulman and his handwritten overheads this semester for Macro, and I miss Gerlach and his pwrpts SO MUCH MORE now.

Gerlach seems like a really nice guy and has good real world examples for class but the tests have almost nothing to do with what is gone over in class. The practice tests were a HUGE help! I had no interest in economics and I still don't think I understand anything about it but I did well in the course.

all in all a good class. takes forever to post final grades--3 weeks at a minimum. exams are challenging but not too hard. heard he's better than some of the other microeconomics profs.

I never went to class, but read the book for a few hours the night before the exams, took the practice tests, and got pretty solid As. The first week that I did go to class, I realized that he just taught basically word for word from the text. The text is written for a 3rd grader so its not hard to get most of the concepts. Easy GER3. Easy A, too.

Nice prof. First exam was not too hard, second was easy, the third was a beast, and the final was pretty challenging. Overall, good class. Does give extra credit, though you never find out how much you got, if any.

FIN. MKTS & DERIVATIVES: These classes are not his specialty. Classes are disorganized and confusing, since he rarely gets the material right on the board the first time. Half of the class is spent listenting to student presentations. Leave finance to the finance dept.

All-around nice guy, keeps lectures straightforward and entertaining (although the material is pretty basic). Textbook is virtually ignored, so save yourself the hundred bucks. Exams cover only in-class material and he provides about 5 years' worth of old exams to study from. Show up once a week and do all the old practice problems for an easy A.

A really great lecturer, and part of why I'm now an econ major. BUT, as at least one other reviewer has said, you can get screwed on the last two exams. BADLY. I studied for them a lot and felt I understood them well and STILL did poorly, even after acing the first test. A great intro to econ, but a potential hit to your grade, so be careful.

he's nothing special-sure some of his notes relate to the real world, and that's cool. he's very plain and his personality is one-dimensional. nice of him to put up pasts exams for studying. unsure if i actually earned any of the extra credit he said he was dishing out. the final was almost all the last material- that would have been nice to know.

Gerlach is the beast of the econ department. Very nice, very interesting guy. Moderate difficulty, but no real work until you have to cram for the tests. Lots of examples that involve candy.
