With all of these positive reviews one would think he rates himself. He is a nightmare! Expect: an unclear grading criteria, unkind comments to students when they meet with him privately (sexual in nature), his tests cover his lectures + 90%, huge study guides, lots of reading, unreasonableness and several cancelled classes.

Just don't take him. He is unrealistic and his grading criteria is very unclear. I tried to get help from him and he implied that I was stupid. His language during class makes me very uncomfortable.

Comment:

Gender and Politics was too great with this man. He gave lots of reading, but related all of it to the course and our very interesting lectures. There are a few long papers (a 12-18 page final paper) and midterm and finals are long tests, but so worth it to take this awesome class with him, or any of his other courses.

Dr. Poelvoorde is the man. Makes learning fun n is able to connect the everyday with hard philosophical texts. He is easy 2 talk to n explains things well. Super funny n loves it when you play along wt him. He is brilliant. Best prof I've had in 4 years. I WANT HIS BRAIN! I've taken lots of his classes at Converse. He is worth getting to know.

Dr. Poelvoorde is a character. He's hilarious, and it a wonderful human being. His teaching style is sort of all over the place. You have to read in his class, so if you don't like reading, there's no point. If you get a chance to take a fairly chill class with him, do it. It's worth the experience of meeting him.

I had this professor 25 years ago as a freshman at William and Mary. He was passionate, funny, knowledgeable and interesting. 25 years later I googled him to find out what had happened to him--I was not a government major and had little interest, but he's one of the best teachers I ever had. Glad he's still teaching.

He is a great! I have been in at least one of his classes every semester. He gets off topic sometimes, but always finds his way back. I would not be a politics major if it wasn't for him. If you have the chance take a class with him.

I love this man! He is the best professor I ever had, hands down. I took him for IDC in 2007-2008 and could not wait to go to his class each day. He is one of the smartest men I've met and challenged me to think more than I've ever had to. SO GREAT :) TAKE HIM!
