Comment:
Schutts is an academic, not a teacher. He assigns reading he doesn't explain and is incapable of organization. Be prepared to be tested on completely random topics. A useless @#*$& of a teacher. Avoid him at all costs.

I adored him as a person, albeit one who hasn't figured out how to teach yet. He needs a teaching persona, such like highschool teachers have, to carry authority and lay the groundwork for discussions. Students need context, historical and as an intellectual safety, more than encouragement, to stay interested.

3-5 hours of reading a day. Boo hoo. I took this class in undergrad and now I am in law school and we get that much reading if not more. Prof. Schutts prepared me. All you whiners stop complaining

This was the most unorganized class I had ever taken. This Prof had so many complaints the dept head had to talk with him.

Good lectures but entirely too much reading assigned. Prof. Schutts' engaging teaching style should be the paradigm that all UBC faculty follows.

Nice enough guy. Amateurish at best when it comes to teaching. Comes across arrogant and not that smart. The class is worse than chinese water-torture...excessive amount of work makes an interesting subject absolutely unbearable. Stay away!!

charming, easygoing but out of touch and unorganized. was his 4th time teaching the course but it seemed like it was his first. assigned too much reading for most students. yes there is a minority that likes and can handle a ton of reading but I'm not one

nice guy who means well and has good points but he's not clear on assignments at all & he assigns way too many readings ($1000 worth). Unless you only have 3 classes or you enjoy 3-5 hours of reading for each class, don't take this class!

I got a A. I work hard. I loved the readings (though not spending almost a thousand on them). This guy lacks insight, though he's pretensious. Has a cult following of self important nitwits. Lazy, had the TA do most marking. You will learn of theory.

Jeff is the nicest teacher you'll ever meet but his class is one where you must think twice before you take it. His lectures were not very clear and if you want huge reading assigments and $900 in book fees (for one year) then do not take his class!

Excellent instructor. Engages scholarly topics instead of "in x year x happened". Encourages students to take positions in historiagraphical debates and defend them. Very comprehensive understanding of topics at hand. Not anti-theory.

At one point he started talking about "why can't people just get along" during an obviously improvised lecture, and it was apparently supposed to be dramatic and insightful. Seems better suited for intro sociology. Has a pack of sycophants (see

This was a great class. The only bad part was when the "whiners" staged a revolt and forced the rest of the class to slow down.It just shows you what type of people should take this class:Scholars/PEOPLE WHO WANT TO THINK!!!!!

Lots of work; covers the material extensively&thoroughly. It's a 300-level course; he expects his students to THINK. If ur the type to whine about reading lots, and if you can't suck it up, then don't take the course. Otherwise, awesome class.
