Dr. Smith is a fantastic lecturer! There are 2 exams and 1 10 page essay, but he's pretty lenient when grading them (if you put in basic effort, you'll get an A or A-). Lots of memorization (150 paintings for 1 exam, 95 for the other). Readings seem important, but you'll be fine without them if you pay attention. I highly recommend his class!!

Took this class for my VAPA, it was totally not worth it. He assigns essays that are long and take a lot of research, makes you memorize over 100 paintings, artists, and dates, and takes points off of your grade for every class you miss. If you're thinking about taking this course for VAPA, don't. Many other vapa classes are much easier.

Dr. Smith is a more old school style professor. set up during lecture: show a pic w/ min. info, talk about it and you are responsible for knowing more details about the works guided by the textbook. grading is kinda harsh, but study rly hard the week before and ur fine. (2 tests 30% each, 1 massive essay 40%). minim. to pass:pay attention in class

Prof Smith is very engaging and really cares about this subject. There are three assignments (two tests & a paper), and you'll do fine if you visit his office hours. He prepares study guides for each of the tests, and only puts art pieces we extensively covered in class on the tests (don't bother buying the book!!). Great class and amazing teacher!

I took this class as my VAPA credit and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Attendance is mandatory but the lectures are interesting and he really wants you to engage yourself in class. You have two tests worth 30% and a semester paper that is 40%. You do memorize a lot of paintings but you learn so much that it might be worth it.

I took his Baroque Art class and I found it very interesting. The classes were lecture heavy, and he would just go through a slide of paintings and the test you would end up memorizing around 120 paintings but its not as bad as it sounds. He is a really great professor and if always prompt with emailing back and grading on time.

Took this as a VAPA and was pleasantly surprised. Although you will have to memorize around 50 works for the tests, he gives out a study guide and if you just memorize what he said in class you will be fine. Class is not hard, and there is no outside work except studying for tests and 2 essays. As long as you pay attention it should be easy

Dr. Smith is a great lecturer! I had a tendency to zone out a lot in class the first few weeks, but I realized I gained so much when I paid attention. Grade comes from 2 exams, 2 papers, and participation in TA discussion section - I think your grade depends a lot on your TA. Write down everything he says in your notes and you'll be fine on exams!

One of the best lecturers I've ever had. I am absolutely not the art type, but his lectures made the class bearable, which is quite impressive. Really passionate and knowledgable about the field. A couple tests that require a lot of memorization and understanding of readings and artwork. One long paper as well. Grading is pretty lenient though.

Professor Smith is super passionate about what he teaches and as a result his class is very engaging. I don't have an art background and have never been particularly interested in art, but I'm so glad I took this class because now I can identify and interpret important works from the period (Northern Renaissance). Interesting and interdisciplinary!

He is a passionate lecturer and promotes student participation in class. Grade is based on 2 4-paged essays (outside of class), 2 tests, and discussion. Have to memorize around 70 art pieces per test (includes ID’s and mini-essays). Grade depends entirely on you writing skills, participation, and your TA. Not an “easy” A, but enjoyable and doable.
