Professor Coleman genuinely cares about his students. He will take the opportunity to get to know you on a personal level if you let him. I went through a very difficult time outside of class, and he was extremely understanding. You could probably get aways with skipping a few classes, but you won't want to. Class discussions are amazing with him.

Dr. Coleman is a good professor who cares about students. He's a good person to talk to outside of class about homework, college or life in general. I plan to take another class with him.

Professor Coleman knows his lit and music of protest. The playlist is like 400 songs long and the reading list covers stuff I have never heard of but should have learned earlier in life. He's cool and laid back, but not easy or uninterested. Scream and Shout! is highly recommended.

I enjoyed his creative writing class but I wouldn't recommend it if you're not serious about writing. You'll have to write A LOT every week, mostly poetry and short fiction.

Professor Coleman knows a lot about the civil rights movement and is enthusiastic about teaching what he knows. The class is a little overwhelming at times due to the violence and hatred of 1960s, but you'll learn a lot.

Dr. Coleman assigns way too much reading but it's always good stuff. Otherwise, I didn't have a problem with his class. He keeps you on your toes and he's very funny at times.

Every book on his multicultural lit syllabus was good. I usually find one or two books in a class that don't hold my attention, but not in that class. I kept all of them and plan to read most of them again.

His creative writing class forces you to be more creative than you thought you could be. I also realized I like poetry and screenwriting more than I thought.

Not sure why everyone says he's hard--on the contrary, I really believe you could skate by in his class, but he makes it engaging enough that you won't need to. He's super chill and funny. The only annoying part is the requirement of up to 8 "outside sources" on papers--no one's got time for that, my friend. Also doesn't give breaks in 2 hour class

I took two classes with Dr. Coleman while I was visiting St. Mary's on a Fulbright. He's an impressive professor with an abundance of knowledge about American culture and literature. I still contact him with questions about American fiction and poetry and he always responds with generous feedback. He helped to make my stay in the States enjoyable!
