Dr. Gauthier was a reasonable teacher. He wasn't too difficult, but you still need to put in some effort.

I highly recommend Gauthier if you're trying to get through PHL150 with minimal effort. I wouldn't bother reading the assigned material as he goes in depth the very next class. You can definitely skip class and pass (I did). Just know when the essays are due & when the logic exam is. The mid-term and final are questions he gives you ahead of time.

The most well spoken and thoughtful individual I've ever had as a teacher. He is extremely in depth in his lectures, very clear, and unbiased. The final was non-comprehensive and he gives the questions ahead of time so you can prepare. Do the readings and pay attention and it is a very doable class.

Pretty decent. Understands this is an intro class so the workload isn't bad at all but manages to keep the lectures somewhat engaging. Does some group work, but it's not actually work, just in class discussion.

He assigns many readings but never very long. They tend to be hard to understand but he covers the readings in the next class. I wish he would not ask people to ask him questions. I come to his class not knowing what I do not know. I am hoping he will fill in the gaps. Expect him to want you to ask questions. His tests are also difficult, so study.

THIS CLASS WAS AMAZING. Expect a ton of reading and be sure to participate in class discussions. Gauthier is hilarious and really snarky. Loved him loved the class. Yes it was hard work, he makes you think but 10/10 would recommend.

The BEST! You are expected to come to class having read the material but the readings are never too long and he does a good job of explaining the content in class. You could get away with skimming material if you listen in class. One logic exam and 2 formal essays and a final (he gives you a study guide!!) One of my favorite professors here.

Hands down one of the best professors I've had at UP. Some students struggled with the material, but if you talk to him after class he will help you. The logic portion was tough, but aside from that the lectures are super interesting. He is a fantastic professor, definitely looking to take his feminism class as well!

In PHL 150, expect 1 test, 3 essays, and the final. You are expected to read for each class. Although there aren't reading quizzes, the essays are based off the content of the readings. He doesn't like it when students use laptops in class, even for note taking. This class is pretty boring but, he breaks up classes with group work.

Don't expect the comments on your paper to be representative of the grade you will receive. A paper containing grammatical errors making the work "nearly impossible to understand" & a paper with minor weaknesses received comparable grades. Ultimately, your grade comes down to his personal opinion of you, not your understanding of the material.

Super nice guy, but the subject is SO confusing and he doesn't help to clarify it much. I did horrible on the first test (D) but got my grade up to a B+! So it is possible.

I thought this guy was crazy at first, but Gauthier really surprised me. He's got a great brand of humor that makes lecture fun and interesting, and he's super down to earth. Everything was explained perfectly and he was always ready to help and explain further if it was needed. Really great guy, super recommended to anyone.

Dr. Gauthier is a great teacher. I took philosophy in high school, but perceived that his teachings added to my appreciation of the subject. He is engaging, amusing, and I would highly recommend him to anyone taking PHL 101

He is an amazing educator and a genuinely entertaining person. I learned so much about Feminism, as well as about how to read and write philosophical essays. Class discussions were consistently interesting and even when we tackled controversial issues, nobody ever felt alienated or offended.

He's ok..don't really know what other philosophy professors are like. Always late to class and his lectures and thought process are very unorganized making him hard to follow. Pretty tough and unfair grader on papers but there's no doubt you learn in his class. Idk..i would take from a better teacher if you can.

Occasionally classes were extremely boring. Often, that was not the case. Class involved a lecture and some audience participation. Papers were easy to complete and he outlined exactly what he wanted in a paper. Final requires no studying if you take notes during lecture. Highly Recommended.

Best teacher I have ever had. Contrary to popular belief you CAN disagree with him and still get an A - but you should go into his office beforehand so that your paper can address his objections. He LOVES his subject, and loves students who put in effort. I am not a philosophy major and he was always willing to help me outside of class. He's great!
