Class is entertaining but not easy by any means. U read the entire book before taking her midterms and final because there were be material on tests that were in chapters she specifically stated wouldn't be on the exam. I chose not to be a TXC major after taking her. If I had a choice, I wouldn't take her course again.

The best advice you could ever get taking this class: know all of the definitions from the book and write down the examples she gives in class. Make a list, flashcards, something....because that is the MAJORITY of the tests. I stuck to those two things and got As on both exams in a class where the average was a C.

The class is pretty moderate, but work does get more intense as the quarter goes on. The midterm is mostly text-based, a killer if don't bother keeping up with the readings. Joan is generally nice, but seems a bit annoyed if you ask her a lot of questions. She can grade pretty hard, too.

I <3 Joan!! she is sooo helpful and really cares about her students. Tests are a little tricky and there is a lot of reading. really cool group project. it reaally helps to go to class and take notes.. half the stuff on the tests is exact same as the notes. awesome lady.

Taking this as a GE, I was very disappointed at the uselessness of this subject. Everything you learn is conceptually obvious, only that the sociologists make up "terms" you have to memorize and understand to pass the tests. I personally think that her tests are easy to pass, but VERY difficult to ACE. Not recommended, unless you want an easy B.
