I had her at Hawkeye, not UNI. I really like her teaching style. She doesn't stand at the front of class and bark at us... she encourages class discussion and finds different ways to teach. We had a lot of homework, but class time flew by.

Joan was a great teacher if you like a teaching style focused on class discussion, rather than boring powerpoint lectures. Probably one of my favorite all-time classes, and time just flew by. Learned so much. Wish I could take one of her classes again..fo sho!

This class has given me more stress than anything else this semester. She is very disorganized, and while there are a lot of papers and "busy work" to turn in on certain dates, she very rarely clarifies what she would like to see in the papers or when they are exactly due, and it can be very annoying.

If you like to know what you grade is in this class, don't take her. I have yet to get any papers back and I haven't the slightest clue what kind of grade I have in this class. Also, tons of busy work. A reflection paper every week plus about 2-3 other papers. If you don't really want to learn anything, take her.

If by "style" you mean complete lack of teaching, then yes maybe we as students need to get used to this. After all, we are paying a decent amount of cash to attend the classes she "teaches". Diverse teaching style or mass disorganized chaos? When I can look back and not be able to tell you what we learned, that is a problem.

Most students are not accustomed to her style. Many have been brainwashed throughout their schooling to be robots with obdedience and absolute structure. Sometimes learning can take place with different dynamics. Be flexible. If you want to someday be a teacher you must be flexible. Your students will be diverse, so you must learn to accept it

HORRIBLE. Did not show up for 4 out of 19 classes, and when she did show up she was extremely disorganized. Not clear on her expectations, and did not give assignments back until the last class. She is very unprofessional, and I am extremely disappointed in the outcome of this class.

Her tests are extremely easy. They are open book and you do them in groups. She's a great person! But sooo disorganized. Takes her forever to post grades. She rarley follows the calendar IF she remembers to post it. The class can be hard to follow although it is easy.

Very nice professor. Test are open book and taken in groups. VERY disorganized though and hardly sticks to the calendar or forgets to post the calendar. Took her 2 months to grade 1 tickler. Wouldn't advise takin it with her if you want organization and a posted grade. Only good things are the test. Barely discuss the book in class.

Please don't listen to the other postings. Joan Farstad is an amazing educator. She is extremely passionate about what she teaches and her students. She's by far the best professor I've had at UNI. Great discussion based class. Very interesting. I loved her.

She really does care about the students, she even invites you over to her house for thanksgiving if you don't have a place to go. However, she gets off topic most of the time. It's pretty much discussion based. She values student's opinions so speak up, and ask her to do group ticklers (little quiz things) because you learn more. Final: study hard.

Joan Farstad is the best teacher I have had thus far at UNI. She is helpful and funny. It is finally a class that you will actually find use for even if you decide not to teach!! TAKE HER!! plus your tests are take home, how much of an easier A will you recieve!?

She is the worst teacher that I have ever had here. Talks about the syllabus and how class she be structured every classtime for 30 minutes. Never lectures, all boring student presentations that no one cares about. Tests are open book. Doesn't teach anything about learning and instruction.. more about dynamics.

She always expected the class to have discussions while she just sat on her computer, and about 3/4 of the whole semester consisted of the class either making posters to go with the corresponding unit or giving presentations. Does not teach she spends most of class time talking about how we could do better on tests rather than teaching for the test. She always has a reason for not doing her job. It takes her 3 weeks to get our tests back. She answered her cell phone and talked on it while we were taking an exam.

This is the worst I have had...........ever. She should stick to the material instead of preaching about gays, alcholoics, the war, and all of her other opinions. Those are never in short supply. Here lectures are though. She never teaches, just gives assignments to students so they teach the material for her.
