This is the last year for her as she is retiring but If I could take another teacher I would. She is friendly sometimes but can be very strict even a jerk to other students. She didn't really teach us much, she just gave us a piece of paper, made us do the work without know how and then won't let us present if we don't do it right. Its a shame.

Shes the queen of "Cs"she seriously plays favorites. I have seen other students do work that that was not as good as mine get Bs and others who did amazing work get Cs. She doesn't like lateness either and if your absent your not getting credit for the homework that was do that day. Good luck !

I strongly recommend avoiding this professor. She often begins class early, and counts being late (even 30 seconds) as a cut from class. Her grading is VERY strict. Which would be fine of the guidelines were clear. However, most of her expectations are unclear and regardless of clarity, not meeting her expectations will heavily influence your grade

If you lose the syllabus, you are done for. As long as you follow along and hand the work in on time, it is not a bad class. The only downside was that I did not really learn to overcome a fear of speaking in public, just how to present a speech as well as myself.

Professor Gerken is tough, so expect to work for your grade. But with that said she is a fantastic teacher and truly pushes her students to do their very best. I took speech with her and i'm glad I did. Thanks to her I can finally get in front of a group of people and present without sounding like a disaster.

If you need a teacher to actually teach you how to prepare and present a certain speech do not take this professor. She will give you a syllabus and you are on your own from there. Assignments are expected the day dated on the syllabus even if she hasn't reached the topic. You basically teach yourself then get penalized for any mistakes you make.

She was probably the most difficult professor I have ever had. She counts being late (even 2 minutes) as a cut from class, and you will not get credit for your homework that was do in that class. The expectations for speeches were unclear at times. Causing me to get a poor grade.

Gerken is a very good professor. Always keeps you aware of all requirements, deadlines, and is very strict. However, she just wants to see you do well, and you will be a better public speaker after taking her class.

Definitely makes you work to earn a good grade. Pushes you to improve your speech skills to excel in the class, but pay attention to the homework assignment dates on the syllabus because she won't always mention them. May come across as difficult but really just wants you to do well.

Expectations are clearly defined, all you have to do what she asks. Participate and improve and you'll do well. The more you participate, the more you'll improve. She will bend over backwards to help all of her students, gives instant feedback and is nothing if not fair. There are no surprises. Surprisingly enjoyable class!

Professor Gerken is a college level teacher. She will push and eventually will bring the best out of you. If you are a slacker and can't blame yourself for why you failed then maybe there is a BIGGER problem! I took her 8am class and public speaking is second nature to me and I owe it to her. So hopefully this changes your mind to take her class :)

To the person who said she won't like you because you're a minority, you are out of your mind! On behalf of her 8am class, it's a pity you think she is like that. She's been very helpful and supportive to our entire class, minorities or not. We have one student who's native language is not English and he kept us (and Prof. Gerken) entertain.

Professor Gerkin is a fantastic instructor, but do NOT take her public speaking class if you are looking for an easy "A" because you will work HARD for the grade you earn. She is very clear regarding her expectations of her students as well as her desire for them to succeed but she will not accept a bad attitude.

Prof. Gerkin grades you hard but lays everything out in the beginning. She keeps it simple. Five minute speeches. Practice 10 times when you meet the requirement. Two outlines in correct format. Easy stuff. She only wants her students to succeed. As hard as the course was, I'd take it again for the improvement.

She is good at teaching speech. I learned a lot and improved my abilities. However, she doesn't have any mercy. There will be no partial credit on late homework. In general, if you are looking to slide by without participating, you won't do it. However, she grades on OVERALL improvement! Meaning: no averaging; so start bad and end well= good grade.

i can honestly say that she is one of the best professors that i have ever had. it upsets me when i hear people complain about her because i know that all she wants is for her students to reach their full potential. i learned so much and have gained a friend after taking her class and if i had the opportunity would take her class again.

Prof. Gerken is stern and you will learn alot from her. There is a lot of work with her course and it is not easy, but if you attend class, follow your syllabus, and complete your assignments. You will be ok.
