I have taken several classes with Jo and I have thoroughly enjoyed all of them. He's the world's leading anthropology expert on AIDS and HIV. He's an easy grader and is passionate about his subject. Don't take his classes if you're not interested in Anthropology, or African Culture.

I really like this Professor, he's one of the best I've had in awhile. He is very laid back and loves to tell stories but they are all relevant. His accent isn't that bad, and he will asks questions to the class if he doesn't know the word in English. There's a little reading everything class but it's pretty short. He's an easy grader too!

"Big Joe" is the best. He is funny, passionate, and bases his classes around occasional lectures but mostly group discussions and student presentations. The papers are really easy and there's never a dull moment with him. People complain he's not helpful, but he really only isn't if you're not willing to put in the time to get to know him.

Joe Lugalla is easily one of the best professors at UNH. With the enough funding or power, Joe could change the world. He is so perceptive and knowledgeable; you learn so much from his life. If you want to learn a lot without enduring a painful workload (the course is listed as writing intensive but it's not), take his classes. He will inspire you.

Great professor, terrible adviser. He gives great lectures and is very knowledgeable. His assignments are sort of a waste of time, it's clear that he doesn't really read your papers. As an adviser, he's terrible. He's very busy doing other things, so he has no time to advise and gives no advice whatsoever. It's not really fair to students.

Joe is an amazing professor, and probably more helpful and willing to engage students than any other professor I've had. I do agree that his grading system is a little arbitrary, but the amount of effort you put into readings and discussions directly correlates to how much you get out of the class in the end.

Anyone who says that Joe is a horrible teacher, is either crazy or too lazy to do the work he asks the class to do. He uses his personal experience, being from Africa to relate to a lot of what he teaches, and it really helps. All of the classes I have taken with him, 500D, 680, and 685 have been awesome and I've learned so much!

I think his grading system is sort of arbitrary, but he is a great professor regardless. Very knowledgable in the material and is able to explain complex issues in a way that, with a bit of thought, are understandable. I wouldn't take this class unless you are already interested in the material, but if your curious about Africa, go for this class.

Joe's a great professor! His class on Africa is awesome. Although he may be difficult to understand for some because of his accent. If you understand the underlying concepts and how the class materials relate to each other you'll do fine.

He is a great guy, I learned so much about Africa. The testing system is a little fluky, but he is funny, nice, and tells lots of interesting stories about his childhood in Tanzania (if you have problems with his accent, listen harder).

make sure to get the test questions from the library or the CD that goes with the book. They are exactly what is on the test. No need to come to class until after the break
