I was a music student, but didn't have the chance to take theory until college, and let me just say that this class was kind of hard. Professor goes way too fast, and most of the time, it's even hard to comprehend what just happened. The class meets thurs. & tues. and you have a quiz EVERY tuesday. Only good thing about the class: No final.

If you don't have a music background, you must study! If you don't you'll fail because the material is so foreign to anyone who hasn't already studied it. It starts off really easy and progressively gets more difficult and complicated. Most of the material builds on each other, so remember the things you do throughout.

If you have no music background, DO NOT take this class. It is extremely difficult, and Professor Schiavo teaches very fast. On top of that, there is a quiz every Tuesday. Very difficult if you don't know anything about music. I would not recommend anyone this class if they are trying to fill an easy Gen Ed requirement.

Reading the other comments, you would think he's a great professor. IT'S NOT TRUE!! His classes are huge, if you have never learned about music in your life than PLEASE DON'T TAKE HIS CLASS. I had no music background and I dropped the class. It was very difficult because he taught fast and u had to memorize a lot! Pick another music class.

The class was interesting, he knew what he was talking about and explained it in a clear manner. As long as you showed up to class, you could easily pass. Gave extra credit opportunities every week.

Good teacher, funny, bit of a diva sometimes , Really cool teacher during lectures, Really tough on cheating and gets mad at students not paying attention and being a distraction .during lecture he stops for questions and really tries to help you understand, Quizzes are straight forward. Dr. Schiavo has been my professor for about 80% of my classes at rutgers since i've been attending. He's a great guy in and outside of class and does so much work for the department. He's got a very busy schedule and even when he's frustrated he never becomes an unlikable person. One of the brightest, nicest, and most helpful people i've ever met.

This course is extremely easy in that the tests are based on the lectures. It is crucial for one to go to class in order to understand the material especially when it gets difficult. He does a great job explaining the things one might not understand. This is one of those "easy A" classes for sure.

Joe is a great professor. If you do not understand material he will go out of his way to help you. He's a great guy to have a conversation with outside of class. The class was pretty easy, you learn the material on tuesday and then have a quiz on thursday. a majority of the class talks and does not pay attention, and this is why he gets upset.

I have this professor right now for Intro to music theory.. I have no music background and im doing fine in his class A's so far. He teaches you what you need to know for the quiz and has practice quizes to look at which are same format for real ones. He is even a better man than his class. Great guy to talk to. we need more people like him @ RU-CA
