Lemly is hilarious and kind and really affirming and empowering to students. 10/10 would enjoy taking his class again. He is always very respectful while still having a quirky sense of humor. Helped me become a better writer. Really accessible and happy to talk outside of class.

I love Lemly! I came into the class with zero expectations and now it's the class I most enjoy attending. He's a chill dude, and I love the fact that he appreciates the value of things outside of class, like attending a talk by a writer you're currently studying. He values participation, so get on that.

Great professor. Really quirky guy. The class was small so it was very discussion-oriented. Had to do a lot of reading, but it was all pretty interesting. He expects a lot on the papers, more than I think I can really do for a chem major, but he's pretty nice and the class wasn't too hard.

Prof. Lemly made me fall in love with African Literature. He is obviously excited and passionate about it and gets the students excited too. My class was really into discussion, which probably helped. He is also a really nice guy, cares about the students, and is excited when they make provocative points about the work.

I really enjoyed this class. I would take another class from him again. He does not do a final nor does he give grades on your papers. This is helpful because he gives you a lot of feedback on how to do better not just a critical analysis.

He is completely unclear about his assignments, and when asked for more information about them, HE SKIRTS AROUND THEM AND THEN COMPLAINS WHEN YOU DO NOT PRODUCE THE APPROPRIATE WORK. Not a good person to take a class with.

Worst English class I have ever taken at Mount Holyoke!! He doesn't know how to teach, instead he relies on students to come in "prepared" to lead the lecture for him. Asking him for help is torture- he talks in circles and his statements are unclear. STAY AWAY FROM HIS CLASS AT ALL COST!!

Awful professor. Stutters his way through pretentious, unhelpful comments and encourages the class to do the same. I can't imagine a worse member of the (normally excellent) english department. Stay away at all costs - or at least don't judge the department by this complete waste of tiem. Also, I wish he would quit whistling at every comment.

very nice man! is really comitted, loves africa. Lots of reading, but books are interesting. Can be a bit boring at times. However, if the class participates its really interesting. wants students to succeed. donesn't give grades, more evaluation style grading.

he's not going to spell things out for you, but he is very intelligent. i don't think he means to be so opinionated, he is just so excited to talk about literature his own opinions get in the way. that isn't to say he doesn't respect others opinions, you just have to support them and be firm.

Anyone who says that they enjoyed Lemly's class was probably sleeping through it. I learned nothing. He rarely lead discussion, but somehow he always killed the conversation. His grading was irrelevant, and hugging a cactus would have been more productive

Very responsive on papers and in discussion- IF you put forth the effort. A lot of people said nothing during discussions, and that can make the class painful. But John is intelligent, witty, and fun to chat with.

Professor Lemly taught me nothing this semester. I could have bought the book , read it, and learned exactly the same thing. I would discourage anyone from taking a class with Prof. Lemly because it will be a waste of time. I was disappointed in him.

Run for the hills! It was agony going to class each week. Lemly is rigid, uncommunicative, and unforgiving. I never want to take another English course again.
