His class is very unorganized, boring to listen to, and mainly shows videos. TAs are helpful in understanding what is going on and what you need to know. Iclicker and discussions are mandatory! Easy grader, most people dont know whats going on but everything you need to know is on website. Got an A+ in class. Gives you test questions in advance!

This guy is beyond boring. 99% of the time students have absolutely no idea what he is even teaching because he is so monotone. The class has been going on for a couple weeks now and half the time I am falling asleep. What is worse is that attendance is mandatory through IClicker so do not cut. Otherwise you drop half a letter grade.

EXTREMELY easy grader, midterms as well. Attendance mandatory w/Iclicker. You lose half a grade each time you don't show up. EXTREMELY monotone, talks super slow, and difficult to hear. Website and classes extremely unorganized. But he provides a study guide so do it and you'll pass. Offers extra credit. Group project, easy A. Didn't buy the books.

2 midterms, group project, and a final paper/project (you choose). Boring lectures, unorganized (especially class website), mandatory lecture because of iclicker. Midterms were easy, just study powerpoints. Easy group project. Didn't even buy the books, but the class was manageable. Gives extra credit! Overall, monotone and boring, but easy.

He speaks slowly and has a monotone voice. It makes it worse because attendance is mandatory. The entire's class work can be finished in two days. There are a couple of homework/questions on the books but they are not needed to get those questions right. They can be answered with Google.

This course was unorganized beyond belief. When students would ask questions to clarify what's going on in class he would go off on 15 min tangents and wouldn't answer the question. TA's didn't even know what was going on. Honestly learned everything the day before midterm/final. I'm still trying to figure out what that class was about...

The most worrisome part is the beginning since his website is a bit confusing to understand, but you get what topics you should study for. Mocktrial was not bad, just do the research&put in some effort. His class wasn't bad, his lectures were not that organized, and it was hard to stay awake sometimes. 2 midterms, 1 final paper (nbd).

Comment:

Yes, Prof. Whiteley is unfortunately but understandably monotone. He is after all an elderly man therefore you can expect his lectures to be rather long and monotonous. Nevertheless, you will learn about an important subject in this course (US-RUSSIAN RELATIONS) and gain a different perspective you'll be glad you took the time to learn.

He is a really nice and sweet professor and really cares about what he is talking about. I admit it is a bit difficult to understand him sometimes but the problem really relies on the students talking so much and being rude. This class is easy and he really helps you do well on the exams! I would definitely take the class again!

Class can get boring because he is hard to listen to and it is dark because he plays videos a lot. Discussions are helpful. Readings are not mandatory to pass - I didn't do any of the readings and I passed with an A-. You can also get extra credit.

In the beginning I thought I would just bs my way through this class. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the class. Once I got over the fact that he's monotone, I really enjoyed his sarcasm and interesting videos in class. He even offers extra credit to attend seminars/presentations by famous figures. He's really sweet and wants everyone to pass

He seems to have vast knowledge and expertise in his field but unfortunately he is quite lacking in talent for lecturing. Many people here said the word monotone: I can't think of a better word. His assignment instructions are very vague. If you're an environmentalist then steer clear; he used a whole forest worth of paper in handouts.

The tests are free response, his lectures are interesting sometimes however there are a lot of videos shown. Also, sometimes he is a little difficult to understand while lecturing. He gives clicker questions every class but it's not right or wrong it's just for attendance.
