He is a very respectable professor. Many think the class is difficult, but there are only 3 exams the whole semester which are in essay format. The readings are interesting. Class participation is necessary, but overall very good professor.

Soooo boring. He almost made me want to switch majors. You can barely hear him during class and you have to read his mind to get a good grade on papers. Don't take him, take anyone else.

Lectures are thick and hard to listen to, very monotone and boring. He is very old so you have to bare with him. He does not teach the material in order and skips around a lot, making it hard to write clear and constructive papers. I would not reccoment unless you LOVE history.

He knows a lot and will be honest if you ask him a question that he truly cannot answer. There were only 3 grades for the semester which were all papers. That was fine for me because I'd rather write than take tests. If you follow exactly what he says, you'll do great.

He's easy if you do what he tells you to do. It's like having your grandpa teach the class.

Thinks he knows everything, and is very long winded. Loves to hear himself talk. He WILL ramble for the entire class, without much logical flow. *DOES NOT TEACH HISTORY CHRONOLOGICALLY, which makes it very difficult to understand. Lastly, his only grades are essays, because he "doesn't want us to focus on facts", no "theories are true knowledge."

Avoid Mayfield if you're looking for an easy, fun, and enjoyable class. He requires "class discussion", which consists of him calling on students and shooting down their ideas. You MUST reproduce his theories in class and in essays or FAIL. He also requires a ton of reading. He's funny at times, but his class will have you bored to death.

Dr. Mayfield was so easy- you have 3 assignments all semester. Come to class and take notes, make a good impression and he will like you. Oh & you never know who you will meet, I met my future husband!

Your grade is dependent upon a few take-home essays that are typically very hard to pull together for a desirable grade. Prompts are difficult and hard to interpret. Cannot take notes on lectures, very sporadic and unorganized. Not a completely awful experience but I wouldn't take him again unless I had to.

If you visit him outside class and show you are working hard, you're more likely to do well. TALK in class. Will benefit you more than anything. Readings are kinda boring but skim at least. Let us pick any paper topic so that was fun. If you're having issues, go chat with him. He's easy to talk to. I'm taking him again if that's worth anything.

If you take him early in the morning you will fall asleep. His voice is monotone and he talks for the entire class. The good thing is that he doesn't have daily quizzes, but because of this, your entire grade rests on 3 very difficult papers.

i LOVED MAYFIELD!! It is not hard to get on his good side, go see him after class in his office, he'll spell out what you need to write for the papers and if you let him know you're trying really hard he's a bit easier on you ;) but has no problem standing there silently till someone starts the discussions, so you do need to read if you go to class

Dr. Mayfield can be extremely boring at times, but his class is really fun at other times. Class time is mainly taken up by lectures. For grading, he gives three papers. The papers are tough but he is really willing to help you if you attend his office hours and work with him. Overall, its a tough class, but not impossible.

Best teacher at Samford University. Great teaching style, open door policy. There's a reason why he's the department chair.

Nice man, but a hard teacher. He has his very own unique style of thinking, and if you are not on his brainwave then there is no way you'll get an A. He is hard to follow. Class seems endless. Best thing about class: no quizzes. Generally a very boring class. Only have two days to write papers, which count for your WHOLE grade.

the most difficult teacher i have ever had. class is solely lecture. you will write essays which he grades very subjectively. after the first essay he decides how much he likes your writing and then you will get similar grades on all following on essays no matter how much work you put in it. lectures are unclear. hard to follow. boring

I really enjoyed the class. If you're good at writing papers- you're golden. No quizzes or anything! It is done mostly in lecture form, but he interacts a lot with the students and encourages you to think for yourself. If you're offended easy or close-minded, dont both taking him. But other than that- go for it!
