I took this class online, and the experience was ok. However, I must say that if you are not prepared to read, take quizzes, and take this class seriously, then don't take this professor. Discussion board feedback is required every week, along with quizzes every week. I didn't pass the class, but I'm going to re-comp it, maybe with him.

Throughout my academic career I have never encountered any professor more dedicated or passionate. While he expects a lot out of you, equally is there to help you whenever needed and will not give up on you. It's a shame he's going to retire, but I'm sure the legacy he leaves behind in his students will live on forever.

Good professor, really understands what he teaches and has a passion for it. Also, really wants to get the work done. Very lenient, and also is very helpful, especially with the ladies. Grade curver as well. BTW, a good drinking game: keep count and have a shot for every time he says "Long story short .." Lol

he is so sweet and truly cares about his students learning the material. he makes earth science interesting even if you never actually wanted to take the class in the first place. he doesnt bore you to death, and has some jokes here and there only trying to keep his students attention. i really enjoy this class.

The best professor that i have ever had! the textbook is not used, ALL YOU NEED TO DO TO PASS WITH AN A is to pay attention and take notes, the quizzes are simple, and the exams are based on a compilation of the quizzes given. Show up to class and take notes. Prof. Obrien is a VERY good teacher. I learned alot and grasped more than I though I would. The text wasn't used at all; everything came from his notes. Attend Every Class! And you'll do well. He is approachable and crystal clear in his directions.

this class blows quizzez are rediculous 10 questions in 10 minutes every week on massive reading... good luck you can never finish on time. And they're always trick questions as if your're gonna learn from tricks. Tests are hard and you get 4 of em'. like 60 questions for 40 minutes. pass on this class take bio or something

I took him as a junior in high school in earth science and ended up with the (or at least one of the highest) highest average. Just be sure to go to his classes and take notes throughout. His handouts are very useful, and reading a bit of the book helps. Very nice guy, though a bit tough. His 4 hour lectures would get tiring. Memorize handouts!

I have no problem with the work being challenging, i do however have a problem with professors who get paid to teach but dont. he is the perfect example of people who know a subject like the back of their hand but shouldnt be teaching anymore

Were these people taking the same Obrien I did? This man is an absolute nightmare! He claims to want to help the students which are struggling with the material but gets mad and yells when you ask questions.IDK why anyone would WANT to take him. Stay as far from him as you can. he's horrible!i doubt there are too many people majoring in this anyway

very knowledgeable, and very willing to provide extra help and work with his students. that said, the class is a LOT of work. about 14 quizzes, 6 labs, 3 exams and a final. he does drop your lowest grades, which is a plus. expect to do a lot of work for his class, and take massive amounts of notes (the book is basically useless)
