Comment:
Professor Palmer was persistently judgmental and prejudiced toward females and "privileged" students. He gave an unreasonable number of assignments throughout the semester (about 80 pages worth of essays), and said that students who skipped one class, even for medical reasons, would automatically fail. He gives arbitrary grades. Worst professor eve

I agree with the comment below- he is a passionate professor, but he is often very biased and has an extreme view. It was surprising that he approaches as an open-minded person but actually does not care about any other viewpoint but his own. plays favorites, and does not welcome ideas that are against his.

Does a great job of engaging the students with the material. However, has clear favorites and NEVER answers emails. This got to be really annoying when I had a question about something. I approached him about this issue once and he didn't even seem to care. The key to acing his class is to suck up to him as much as possible.

Would have been a fantastic class-everything else was GREAT but the papers & project were ridiculously hard. Wouldn't make clear what he wanted (maybe trying to get students to feel the same discrimination that's the problem in bad schools?). Worked our asses off on group project, gave us a B cause it was "boring" and had "too much information."

Professor Palmer is by far the BEST professor at Colgate. He is very open with students about his life and beliefs and allows students to be honest about their lives and beliefs. You will leave his class actually feeling like you learned something that you can take with you for the rest of your life. Definitely recommended!!

Educ is my major, and when signing up for classes Johnston said if I take another course with him I would be taking the professor and not the course. With Palmer, I am taking both the professor AND the course. His passion is contagious. You will never think the same again. Palmer is a MUST before you graduate

I cant believe anyone could say something negative. Palmer changed my life. He is extremely passionate, intelligent, and personal with all he does. Do not take class for an easy grade, but show passion for readings and you will get a good one. Always available to discuss, and always challenging ideas. TAKE PALMER.

You'll never have a better experience in class. He'll square off with you in class if he disagrees with you but he's concise in what he means and he gives you an opportunity to have your own ideas as long as you're clear about what you mean. I promise you will not regret taking a course with him, especially Race and Education.

Such a passionate and wonderful teacher. Very insightful. Do the readings and participate!!! See him for office hours. Class was mostly discussion-based, 2 papers, daily (2/week) blackboard posts, group proj, and a final. Easy course if you work for the grade. Fair grader.

Very good professor! Passionate and knowledgable. Had him for Core Korea and though we didn't really do much reading, we still learned a lot and his tests were relatively easy. He is a hard paper grader, though, and slightly unclear when giving out instructions. He's really reasonable and lax about deadlines, overall a wonderful experience!

He is the best professor I have taken so far at Colgate. He loves teaching and makes class discussions really interesting. Dicussion based classes. He does not play favorites, and wants everyone to succeed in the class. Grading is not too hard as long as you take time for assignments. recommend HIGHLY. take him, it's refreshing and enlightening

Comment:
Palmer believes in a discussion based class, which was interesting at times. But the class size made it difficult. His expectations for assignments and group projects are not clearly expressed. In addition, there is no clear syllabus or material to be covered in class-- he never lectured, class was simply student discussion based on readings.

Rude man who serves as the antithesis to good teaching. Exhibits CLEAR favoritism in class and w/ grades. No rubric or justification for grades. Well known to have changed a C grade to an A after a brief meeting. Difficult to get hold of outside class- does not respond to emails. Strongly, strongly advise against taking any courses with Palmer.

The guy is ok. It's really annoying that he has clear favorites. Harsh grader when it comes to group presentations. The class is too large considering that it's a discussion based course. Palmer can't control the class. He's pretty relaxed though and can be funny.

Loves people who talk in class. Likes to hear your opinion, even if he disagrees. Kind of a tuff grader. Gets to know his students. Speak up and you should be fine.
