Dude quizzes and then lectures you after you've already failed. I had him 4 times. Overall a terrible teacher, but also pretty easy.

John knows what he's doing, but I don't feel that he was that great of a prof. When he's explaining terms it's fine, but once we started to film projects and use Premiere, his teaching skills went way down. I guess he's just not great at explaining hands on material. Tests are online and the book really helps with them. He also says "um" a lot.

John Schmit is easier to deal with in higher level courses than entry level classes. He's willing to listen and help students but he's known for hard pop quizzes and tests. He's arrogant sometimes but that's easy to forget about. Not the worst I've had but definitely not the best.

I didn't hate John like everyone else did. You expect him to be really awful after you hear EVERYONE say bad things but he wasn't terrible. There was a pretty huge workload considering all of the lynda.com tutorials he required which became frustrating. I learned a lot and have a lot to show for the class.

I had trouble hearing him over the lights. He's very soft spoken and uses zero emotion when he talks, which makes the three-hour lectures for summer absolutely atrocious. It's not a good sign when students who aren't even film majors in the class seem to know what they're doing better than he is. He also never answered any e-mails I sent him.

Not a terrible class, but you'll never get an A. He's a super strict grader, but nice enough of a guy.

The class was enjoyable. John...not so much. He knows what he's talking about, but getting help from him is very difficult. It's not that I don't like the guy, he just seemed very detached from the students in the class.

His voice is monotone, making it hard to stay awake in class. Grades extremely hard for beginning class. I would NOT recommend you take him unless you want your grade points to take a hit. Do yourself a favor and: Avoid. Avoid. Avoid.

Just don't bother with docentary-at all. The teaching gets even worse as you move up the scale. The GVSU school of com is a complete joke and utter waste of money- especially the film program. Go to GRCC. They have better equipment AND teachers.

John Schmit is a nice guy. Other than that he was without a doubt the worst professor I ever had. VERY boring. Never asked during his lectures if we understand. Pop quizzes that are nearly impossible. Very unreasonable. He laughed at me when I came to him with a problem. Makes you struggle for a good grade. AVOID JOHN SCHMIT. And i passed his class

If you're taking Media Production 1 or 2, stay away from Schmit. The only thing he knows is audio. When it comes to film and video, he is totally incompetent. Most the procedures and ways he teaches are wrong and other professors will tell you they're wrong. If you try to relay knowledge Schmit taught you, prepare to be laughed at. He's real bad.

Lets start with man is he boring. Read over all the previous comments. He's not good at all. He has experience, but instead of applying that to teach, he just belittles you with his "superior knowledge." This class almost made me quite film/video. He thinks his class is more important than anything else and requires more than chemistry teachers do.

It's interesting to read the comments that are possitive reagarding this prof's skills. If you look at the syntax and the prose in those particular comments they use relative expressions, grammar, and diction. Maybe John should take time to help his students succeed, rather than belittling them by servicing his fragile ego.

I have had Professor Schmit for CFV 125, CBR 281, and worked for him as a TA for CFV 125. I really like how he runs class and I find him easy to talk to and easy to ask questions of. I think he knows what he's talking about. Sometimes he sort of spaces out or you think he's not listening, but really he's thinking before he says something.

The best you're going to get is a B, because Schmit is all about paperwork to accompany the projects, and he is all about finding small flaws. He expects your work to be near professional, which is impossible because normal students don't have the time. That being said, he is also a nice guy and is willing to help you or give advice. BUT NOT EASY.

Media Pro2 was not the class for me. John says he knows alot more than he appears to, ever seen night skate?? Focuses very much on lecuring and the textbook, when It would be a lot more helpful to get some hands on experience, hello media PRODUCTION 2.
