Comment:

Professor Shen definitely has an "in your face" sort of personality, but that didn't bother me in the slightest. He wants his students to make the effort. An "A" is completely achievable in this class, provided you put in the time to actually study and watch EVERY lecture. He allows a crib sheet for tests and has several extra credit questions.

This guy is so arrogant and prejudiced. I missed class due to work, asked him if I could make it up, he says, "Too bad." The very next week this dude that's always on his mac surfing through Facebook ditches class and asks what he missed and gets the whole freaking lecture. I felt some discrimination there. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.

Mr. Shen is an awful teacher. He is arrogant and sees students as enemies. He actually relishes making the material difficult and tricking you into making mistakes on the test. His workbook is dated and unclear. His philosophy is that if you can teach yourself microbiology to the level that is passible at UCLA or somewhere, then you'll pass. AVOID

HORRIBLE. Lectures are incredibly boring and they don't often match up to his crappy lecture notes! His tests are extremely hard and most often irrelevant to what he is teaching. Doesn't say what textbook you need! For a whole week, he contacted NONE of us! He is salty about all the negative feedback he gets on his class even though he deserves it!

Unfortunately, he is the ONLY MICRO130 instructor at HCC. First off, it took him OVER A WEEK to contact all students enrolled in his class. His lectures are boring, unclear, and irrelevant to his hard exams. A+ instructor. Took his BIOL 130 class. He allows a crib sheet during testing. There isn't enough time to search your sheet to answer all the test q's. So you have to know your stuff!! The crib sheet is just useful to confirm something you might have been doubting. Attend all his lectures, read the book, and pay close attn 2 notes. He is fair!

Hardest class I've ever had, but very interesting and I've learned a lot! He's a great knowledgeable teacher if you are a great student. You need to take the time to attend class, write notes & study hard. He's also very willing to answer questions in person & email. I recommend his class if you want to learn a lot.

This class should be inviting to the course because it?s an introductory level, but the class is too tormenting and boring, He explains unknowns with unknowns. The exams are extremely difficult. Studying the ?The Behavioral Objectives,? which according to him is the basis of the exams (not true), will only help you get a passing grade.

Super smart guy he knows his stuff in his sleep, be expected to take LONG tests 7-8 pages, essays too. Can use a crib sheet but info is you either now it or you dont,even with your crib sheets. STUDDY, THIS IS NOT A SIT BACK AND DO NOTHING COURSE. SUPER HELPFULL IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS BUT YOU GOT TO STUDY AND THINK LIKE A CELL.

Shen knows biology! He has been teaching for 30+ years. Tough tests, lab too, but doable. I barely use my book I bought, but it has come in handy a couple of times. Ask him Q's, he will answer them. Use your crib sheet, and don't wait to the last minute to cram for the exams or lab tests..Cable class option is a must!

Can b tactless & used cable course videos in class--but knowledgable. What he covers in lectures/videos WILL be on exams. Key to an A:use the StudyGuide--he basically gave all the notes necessary--AND on allowed cheat sheet, answer all "objectives"/questions at end of guide. GOOD forStudyingForNursgExams. Quirks irk? Take his cable course instead.

Shen is a really good instructor if you are actually interested in LEARNING. An "A" is very possible, but expect to study a lot of material. Tests are not straight out of the textbooks either. While they are multiple choice/matching, you will still need to actually understand the material as the questions are about application.

i graduate from hcc in spring of 05 and this was my first C, i busted my...you know what...and i felt his tests were extremely misleading. he has the attitude that its my way or the highway, he also puts down a lot of military student, and will more than likely tell you about this comment in his next class and whine about it if he reads it too bad
