I am a High School History. No Professor has done more to show me what not to do with my classes. Condescending, rude and self absorbed. I think some of the things he discussed were interesting however his tests were very difficult and often included material that was neither covered in class or within the readings.

I felt like I learned a lot from his lectures. His tests were extremely hard and I didn't do very well. But I did learn a lot and enjoyed his lectures more than any other on campus.

a history teacher's professor is who Dr. Stealy was he wold make you work but when the class was finished you knew and retained alot of information about West Virginia yes his 2 day exams were killer but as he would tell you it was your job to learn and that was what college was meant to be you find the answers he would teach you how to find them

Dr. Stealey is an excellent professor. WV History is one of the hardest classes I have taken, but also one of the most interesting classes. He is extremely intelligent, and I have never known a professor to know as much in one subject area as he knows. If you work hard, you will get the grade you deserve. He will be missed at Shepherd.

A REAL professor. Strait lecture and notetaking- all material covered fully and clearly. 3 tests based on notes- just study, write down what you know and you'll do fine. 2 easy book reports too. Nobody knows half of what Dr. Stealey knows, and his retirement will be a great loss to Shepherd. A prof. for true history buffs. Great stories too.

If you follow his lecture, and can show him on the tests that you understood, you will be fine. A large number complain, but then again, when given a test with 10 identification questions, and given 75 minutes to do them, they leave in a half hour. What do people expect? If you takes sufficient notes on his lecture, and can recite, you're fine.

What an awful, utterly useless teacher. He is completely incapable of answering questions asked in class, cannot stay on topic and focused on the course material for the class, then expects you to know the most exact minutiae on his TWO DAY EXAMS. A terrible teacher, that ruined my GPA as a history minor. DO NOT TAKE HIM IF YOU WANT TO PASS.

This professor is witty and intelligent, but he expects you to invest yourself in learning the material. If you have no discipline or cannot remember facts to test, you may want to forgo the class. The complaints are endless, but the course is only marginally difficult. Students in some departments have more practice at deep learning than others.

The single biggest reason why university professors shouldn't get tenure. Dr. Stealey, while a nice guy with some GREAT stories, just doesn't cut it as a professor. His lectures are disjointed and unclear and his tests cover TOO MUCH material at a time and are also unclear essay-wise. He's better suited for research rather than teaching. GPA killer

His class definitely lives up to the standards of being the hardest class you will ever take but if you study and attend class you should be fine. I took it my first semester at Shepherd and got a B. I studied the "notes" and didn't listen to a word he said because he tended to go off topic the entire class and boast about himself the entire time

Worst teacher I have ever had. Expects you do ALOT of reading. All essay tests and if you are not detailed on your answer to a T.. FAIL. Tests are based on out of class readings AND notes from class (which is near impossible to take due to the random rambling about his pointless childhood stories). Extremely arrogant and self absorbed STAY AWAY!

Dr.Stealey's WV Hist. is not impossible if you SHOW UP, and study hard! His speech is sometimes hard to understand so the "floating notes" are helpful-but not always accurate! Take your own notes, compare to the "floating notes", and then compare both to book. I got an A by doing this, while taking 5 other classes! Ask questions..he will answer!

I find in ironic that Elementary Education majors must be subjected to some of the poorest teaching methods imaginable-- Not to mention the absurdly tedious material and archaic test formats. The lecture style is scattered, confusing, and unclear. He makes it no easier if you ask him to clarify a point. Good Luck!

Worst professor I had this semester sadly, and the only one I had a complaint with. Statistically speaking, essay exams are the worst way to test a student's knowledge of the subject, as variety is much better on exams. I disagreed with how he gave exams as you never seem to satisfy him. Positives he's a decent lecturer, but wouldn't recommend.

I LOVE learning ("non-traditional" student); took due to WVinterest. GPA-killer. Means well, but forgets that we're not all HIS majors & authors. No textbook; long, rambling, lectures; hit us with an exam on 12/4 & 6 w/the final on 12/13. Don't do it if you don't HAVE to/can't devote 10+hrs/wk to studying. (I did about 5-7, MIN).Can you CLEP this?

Professor Stealey is by far the most awful professor I have ever had the displeasure of having. I was an A student in American History in High School; I can recite the Presidents in order from memory and have a near literal memory of American History, yet I still failed his class. The reason: I didn't provide enough detail in my answers. AVOID!

Wait until he leaves to take WV history if at all possible. I'm an A student, I have NEVER done poorly in a class and I spent hours upon hours studying only to get a D on his test. Arrogant, rude, and sarcastic--a horrible educator and the class was a terrible experience.
