I took Prof. Uleich's senior capstone course, the bible as lit, 8 years ago. A small seminar, it was the most stimulating and intellectually rigorous course I had taken at the UA. I largely credit my recently earned PhD to him. If you are serious about learning and pushing your intellectual boundaries, his classes are a must.

Prof Ulreich was a pretty harsh teacher but an amazing guy! He is always available to go over a past test or paper with you. He works hard to make sure you are understanding the class but can definitely call bull if you are on Facebook all class period. Just try to pay attention and form a strong student-prof relationship and your C may become an A

Ulreich is a really good professor, but be prepared for a lot of studying, a lot of reading, and very, very difficult quizzes. If you put the time in, you will get a lot out of this class. The essays were super easy, it's worth noting, and worth a big portion of the grade.

He's great with Milton, sure, but most of the time the lectures are dry and useless when it comes time for the test. Do the reading questions, as the majority of test and quiz questions come from them. The best days were the ones when TAs gave lectures.

Worst I have had at the U of A. Gives quizzes that no one can pass because they don't have the book yet. I taught Joint Warfare doctrine in the military for years and he told me my papers were incoherent and illiterate. Grading is not impartial. He is highly illogical and his understanding of content he teaches is elementary at best.

I love Dr. Ulreich. He loves what he teaches, and makes it as interesting as possible. Be aware, however, that the TA you get in this class is COMPLETELY in charge of your grade. Consult with then before handing in an essay or you may be unpleasantly surprised by how low your score is.

Ulreich is an awesome person, whose passion for literature is great. He knows so many things about so many texts, and he has the ability to make even an essay on poetry interesting and enticing. He is also funny and caring. I love his passion for Milton and loved the texts in the class. Highly recommended!

There is a TON of assigned reading every night and the quizzes require you to memorize the texts, the lectures are just ramble but he posts the notes online, he likes to test on readings that do not appear in our books, would not recommend

You will have to memorize passages, but most of the works involved have a distinct writing style and not-too-many characters anyway. Class gets off topic a lot, but the lectures are interesting, and are essentially outlines of various critiques of works he has written over a very long career. He knows more than you, but will respect your opinion.

I took two classes of his at once, so I was slightly overloaded. Ulreich tends to assign large readings every night and his tests are based off which character said what and in what work, so memorization is something you should be slightly good at to survive.

You will think Milton is hard at first, and that the class is hard but you will get over it eventually and start enjoying the content. He is meticulous on papers as well as when you talk so choose your words wisely. Overall its a great class, Milton is wonderful and Ulreich is a professor dedicated to his craft, which is a rare thing.

Professor Ulreich is a rare breed; he genuinely is passionate about what he is teaching & seems to have fun doing it. I had a class with him Fall 2009(ENGL373A), which should have been painfully boring, considering my interest in the sub. matter, but became my favorite class. He absolutely has a tendency to tangent, but it's never dull!

Professor Ulreich is very passionate about teaching Milton. It was strenuous at first, because of the full-load of reading and the meticulous analysis of the texts. In the process, I learnt many new things, and Professor Ulreich turned out to be a very helpful and interesting fellow. I would recommend his class because though it is hard and he has

The class wasn't a lecture and it was a little on the chaotic side. Some interesting, tangential suggestions/debates went on this semester. He let's the class get off topic frequently, and rarely finishes his lecture notes, but for those of us who participated it was enjoyable. He also cut down the amount of assigned readings from before.

Dr. Ulreich loves what he does, and that really shows. He uses word for his slides, which is awful and ridiculous, but the texts are usually a little interesting. He has very distinct viewpoints and he specifically teaches just what he believes, which gives the impression that he is quite narrow-minded, which is fairly accurate.

His GOAL seems to be to make students ABHOR the assigned texts and drop out of the major. He's mean because he realizes that the works he teaches are now socially/culturally IRRELEVANT! Foundational and fundamental? HELL NO! I doubt philip roth writes with texts like the faerie queen in mind. GIVE ME A BREAK. Just retire and get outta the way.

He expects you to forgo all other classes and focus on his. How else could a person possibly read two 17th Century plays in one week? He's obviously passionate, but his expectations are way too high, and he patronizingly tells you everyday that you should "drop out of this major" if you find his class too hard. Plus, his TA is even more pompous!
