The labs are a lot easier than 4a/b. Lectures are straight out of the book; tests are identical to the practice tests. You don't really need to go to class, which is lucky because Ellman is mind-numbingly dull.

Used the same format as the previous tests. Quizzes were hard but didn't count for much of the total grade. Midterms were really easy because they were just like the old ones. Final was pretty tough but just like the old one again. Know your reactions!

He is...articulate. Every word is enunciated, and everything is clear. You get practice midterms and quizzes with no curveballs. The labs are pretty light as well: nothing compared to the 4a/4b labs. The downside is that it feels like you could have learned ten times as much in the same amount of time.

Great notes! no need to read the book...just do the assigned problems before the quizes; no homework is turned in for lecture. Practice exams are exact format, material to real things.

Ellman is unstoppable. He is like a robot during lecture and even while i fall asleep, he goes on and on, writing notes on the board with perfect handwriting. Props to him. He really knows his stuff. Exams are not too difficult as long as you keep up with the readings and problems. Do the practice exams! They are really similar to the real thing.

Best professor ever! Very good and clear lectures, tests are straightforward and he gives practice tests that are identical to the real thing. Some people struggle in this subject, but do the readings and it isn't hard to get an A

I can't say he's bad but I can't say he's great. Every day, you can expect a decent lecture that is clear and logical and well prepared and that's it. He never really did anything unusual like tell a story or amusing anecdote, do a demo or provide a real world example so class can be really boring. He is helpful and very friendly in OH though.

Ellman is a stud. He posts past midterms and finals to provide the student with additional tools to succeed in an otherwise demanding chemistry class. Stay on top and there should be no reason that your grade directly reflects your efforts

Prof Ellman is wonderful! His lectures are clear, his handwriting is nice, and his exams are straightforward. He gives you all the tools to do well if you are willing to work hard. Not only is he approachable, but he makes students interested and motivated to learn. I would say he is one of the best teachers at Cal!

Professors like Ellman are hard to find at Berkeley. He is straightforward, easy (relative to other professors and classes), gives clear lectures and notes. Make sure you take good notes, some test questions come from the notes. Quizzes are easy if you prepare and come from the homework (mostly). The second midterm is much harder than the first

He announces when he'll give quizzes, so review notes and do the hw for those. Understanding his lectures, reviewing notes, and being able to do well on practice exams should be sufficient for this class. After reviewing notes, take a practice exam seriously. If you don't do well, do the hw. Otherwise, take the second exam.

Wonderful professor; best I've had at Berkeley. Makes a difficult subject enjoyable to learn. As a person, he is very approachable and caring. Passionate about teaching and making sure his students get the most out of his class. Consider yourself lucky if you get him as a professor.

all he does is write his notes on the blackboard. He does not explain or elaborate. He uesd models only once...and then messed up his chair flip. He did not seem prepared to teach this class or to care about the subject matter.

Probably the best professor I have ever had at Cal. The lectures were always interesting and Ellman is clear and has great handwriting. His notes are concise and the problems and notes are good indicators for the tests which start out incredibly easy and get more difficult. Fair in grading everything, a great professor.

He's very clear and fair. His tests are tough and only get tougher as the semster goes by. But he's really nice and tries to make it as interesting as possible, much better than general chem.
