Very easy professor, but you will not learn anything valuable from his class other than stories about his life. It was a waste of my time, and I would not recommend taking his class.

Comment:
Dr. Porter is very amusing, but will constantly go on tangents about his lifeĆ¢€¦you will hear the same stories at least 30 times. If you're planning on law school, don't let him know because he will bring it up negatively at least once a week. Fairly easy grader, helpful if you ask, and is always willing to rectify mistakes he made

I've reviewed Porter several times and mysteriously the comments have disappeared. Porter is the worst professor at Butler University. He is obviously pro Greek and he shows that in his grading. If you're not Greek, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. He also doesn't teach (standing up in front of the class and reading verbatim notes is not teaching.)

Porter is a fairly easy professor. If you show up to class and talk maybe once per class you should get at LEAST a B. As long as you listen to him and answer his test questions the way he explains it you will be fine. He's quirky, but fun.

Class material was pretty dull, especially for the Chinese half, Islam was a bit more entertaining. Dr. Porter's personallity reminds me of the actor Jim Carey. Fun in class, make sure you complete the assigned readings prior to class. By the way, it seems everyday he talks about his college days in Crawfordsville, IN. He will especially like you i

At first I was stuck in the China/Islam course b.c it was the only one that fit my schedule, a subject i thought would bore me to death. This turned out to be my favorite class I've ever taken at Butler, and I'm taking him again next semester. He really keeps you engaged and truly cares about teaching!

Comment:
Dr. Porter is a nice guy, but not a great professor. He often rambles on tangents about his experiences in Greek life, living in Europe, or his wife, the attorney. It is quite annoying because none of this is on the test, so you often have no idea what is coming. I would not recommend him, if he thinks he could work for tips, he is mistaken

From his famous "I am the evil Dr. Porter speach" on the first day, Porter will have you riveted to your seat with interest in what he is saying. Easy grader, easy tests, stickler for attendance, hilarious, and easy going. I recommend him.

This man allows people to think differently about a lot of things. He has reshaped many things that I thought about into a more liberal view and for that I am grateful. He sometimes speaks quite mysteriously, but dig through the riddles. There is some amazing things to be learned about being a human. Extremely dedicated and passionate as well.

Comment:
This class was on Tolkien and was very enjoyable. Class featured mostly student discussion. He was open to ALL our opinions and is one of the few profs who wouldn't come down hard on you for bringing up Christianity in class. He is friendly and fun. Not at all organized though. He misplaces papers a lot, and comes to class late. Fair grader.

Just like many professors in the liberal arts and sciences, Dr. Porter is very intelligent and interesting while at the same time quite dramatic. He teaches through analogies which is very helpful to the average undergrad. For example, he will compare and contrast Confucian rule with Fraternity bureaucracy. All in all, he is a nice prof and wort
