AMSL 130. This professor knows his stuff. You want to learn, pay attention. You want to learn, prepare. I really like professor Halcott and learned a whole lot about Deaf Culture and signs you can't find in a book. He allows us to get a peek inside the Deaf community. Wish he was teaching the next class.

I've had Halcott for a few ASL and Interpeting class. Yes he is a bit strict, but he knows his stuff and wants his students to absorb the ASl language.

It kind of seemed like he had issues with using the online system. He would post a lot of " disregard this and that" posts. In short the way he uses black board is confusing. My advice is read VERY carefully and check announcements regularly because it could change .

Terrible. He doesnt have clear expectations at all. I have taken the ASL 1 equivalent at another college with an amazing professor and she put a huge emphasis on Deaf culture/history, grammar and syntax. Prof. H doesnt. He emphasizes vocabulary. He doesnt teach sentence structure or grammar but he expects you to know it. Take another professor.

Very down to earth and friggin hilarious. This is college, not high school. He's definitely not here to baby you but will be very supportive of you if you put forth the effort, if you don't.. then why should he waste his time? He is VERY Deaf Culture oriented. As he should be, he's Deaf and it's the language you are "choosing" to learn and respect.

First online class I've ever taken. It was an interesting experience, the professor was always there for you through email. Lots of reading and writing but I learned a lot.

The teacher would have the class write the test questions, and he wouldn't read through them first. The questions most often were opinions or didn't make sense!! So frustrating. You could never get a hold of the professor. Most unorganized and lazy teacher I have ever had. Worst online class I have ever taken!

What a joke. This class had no direction whatsoever. I feel I've wasted my money trying to learn about something I was extremely interested in prior to taking this class. Did not hear from the teacher the entire semester.

I took online intro Deaf Culture. For a person who's taken most education online to date & never had a problem before, I have to say this course was disorganized & hard to follow. A LOT of reading to keep up with & impossible to remember it all, but interesting. Tests were really challenging.

He is a pretty good professor. If you are more of a visual learner than this is a language for you. It's more than just learning sign language it is also about the culture. He has a sense of humor at least. I'm surprised he fingerspells fast for a level one class. That is the only thing I could complain about.

He's a really fun and funny teacher. He makes the class interesting and easy to understand. But he will not help you try to do better. Make sure you get to class on time especially on midterms quizzes tests and finals. He WILL shut the door and lock it on you! He's a good teacher regardless of not helping you raise your grade.

Online. Worst class I've ever taken. Unorganized and unclear to all, every week I would see multiple posts from classmates asking whats going on, what are we supposed to be doing..etc. The tests were a joke, he had the students (who were confused) write them and did not give enough time. First time I didn't finish, 25?'s in 20 min. Horrible!!

Professor Halcott is a great teacher for someone just starting out in ASL! GO to class, do your homework, and you will have an A, no problem. Professor Halcott is funny and always willing to help you, and he's such a nice guy! I highly recommend this class for newbies.

He is stern but a great teacher! I really enjoy his teaching style and his methods. But I agree it is not for everyone. If you are their to learn and not just find a date or hangout with friends, then this is the class for you...

If you are enrolled in the interpreting program at Mesa, an unfortuante fact of life is you will encounter Joe Halcott. Be prepared to learn nothing. As you sit in class, you will question the usefulness of your eyes and strongly consider the benefits of boring them from your skull. Pray that the majority of your classes are spent with a better equipped sign language teacher, like Coco the monkey.
