Comment:

The course was comprised of random topics each week which had no relation to each other. The tests were made up of about 4 essay questions which were very broad and amorphous. Tough grader, but if you stay on top of everything a good grade is manageable.

I'm not writing this out of spite, but I would recommend staying away from Spillane unless you absolutely need to take his class. The man is extremely knowledgable, but his lectures would most aptly be described as, "the history of what Spillane knows". Very abstract/ambiguous lectures which lacked organization. No book, 3 papers, 2 tests.

The most rewarding and interesting class I've EVER TAKEN! Professor Spillane is extremely intelligent and interesting. I NEVER missed a class because I enjoyed his "lectures" so much.

Completely agree with last post. Inconsistent with grading, provides useless tips on improvement and appears to be biased and vindictive. There are better history professors to take, which I recommend doing.

Inconsistent / tough grader. He'll tell you to fix things for the next paper, you do it and then he takes points off for it. Lectures are interesting and he's a nice guy. No tests, no text book, no final or midterm, just tons of mini papers. Not clear on what he wants alot of the time. Suck ups in the class do particularly well

History and Public Policy. Pretty good class, not a traditional history class. different topics every week with a lot of short writing assignments and group projects. He is a good teacher, kind of a hard grader but he built a boost into the grading scale so it wasnt that hard to get an A.

The tests can be a little tricky, but fair. The in class assignments and the optional final allow you to boost up your grade. He grades fairly on the paper, but make sure you don't summarize the paper and put thought into it. The class is easy to get a B in, but it takes effort to get a B+ or an A.

Class is easy if you attend and pay attention. He is a very good teacher. Tests are a little funky because you have no idea how you did on them, but don't fret, if you study, you'll do fine. I got an A and just paid attention. GREAT TEACHER!!
