Comment:
Most difficult college history Ive ever taken. Rothman himself gives a lot of lectures which are not very boring, but be prepared to write the whole time. Your grade is solely determined by your TA and if you get a bad one, like I did, then youre screwed. Weekly discussions. Try and take history online.

Dr. Rothman was awesome. He is so knowledgable about this point in history and it truly shows. He is also passionate and his lectures are more like story time versus just sitting and reading from a powerpoint. Obviously any history class comes with baggage, but his was fairly light compared to other HY classes I've taken.

The lectures are interesting but he goes really fast which is hard. The discussion section is probaly harder than the actual lecture piece because you have to read different materials every week which can be books that are 200 pages or sometimes watching an hour long TV show so it's inconsistent. He made the information in lecture easy to learn.

Rothman's lectures are all class long, but he keeps it very entertaining and funny. Super helpful during office hours and is willing to talk to you for as long as you need about the class. Class is based almost entirely on lectures, so going to class is super important. All around one of my favorite teachers at UA.

Makes you buy like 7 books (Not too expensive) and although some of them are interesting I don't feel like they went well with the course material. Also had to write two book reports and the midterm and final consisted of two essays.

Rothman is one of the best History Professors on campus. Lectures are really engaging. He is a super nice guy but the class really depends on your TA who does all the grading. Get ready to ready a book a week and talk about it in sections. There are two papers based off the books and two exams but you get the questions early which helps a ton.

Rothman is great at lectures. He really keeps you interested in the topics and never makes you want to doze off in class. He lets you know what the test essays are (only two given for the semester) a week in advance. You will also have to write two papers on the books you read for the discussion class. Go to class and you will be fine!

Dr. Rothman is a great professor. Really engaging in his lectures and you can tell how passionate he is about history. He also usually cracks a joke or two each lecture. Exams are only essay questions which are given to you a week in advance so you can prepare what to write.

Dr. Rothmans class was great. He is engaging in his lectures and even cracks the occasional joke or two. The hardest part about this class is the discussion small groups. Get ready to read a book a week. We only took two test and but the questions are given in advance. So as long as you go to the lecture and get the information you'll be fine.

Dr. Rothman is a really good story teller, keeps the class engaged, and makes history as interesting as possible. Go to lecture, if you don't you will struggle on the tests. His tests are in-class essays, but he gives the topics out a week before.

Dr. Rothman has a great grasp of the History of the South. Criticism that he's a Yankee & shouldn't be teaching 'Southern' history is ridiculous. We're all Americans & have all been affected by the Civil War. It was the pivotal event in making America the great country it is today. Everyone's perspective is relevant & Dr. Rothman's is on point!!!

Absolutely loved his class. It was interesting being taught American South by someone from the north. He kept me interested. If you go to class and pay attention the tests aren't too bad, the papers are tougher, though. I'd love to take his class again.

Dr. Rothman's class is difficult. If you are the type of student that does not commit fully to the class you will fail. Be ready to take a hit on your GPA too. No one gets an A.

Hands down best teacher in the History Dept. His lectures are interesting, his comments insightful and relevant (and hilarious), and his grading FAIR (he makes his expectations well-known, and grades accordingly). Approachable both in-class and out of class. Extremely humble (unlike Kohl), and respectful of students' opinions.

VERY TOUGH GRADER! Whatever grades you are used to getting take a full point off your GPA for this one. No one in our class got an A on either essay. Average test grades in low 70's. Essays have little to do with class- you cant get away without reading with over 140 credits this is the first class i read for and it wasnt cause I wanted to. AVOID!

Rothman's class is difficult, but oh so worth it. It's nearly impossible to make an A in, but his lectures are fabulous. Be prepared to take tons of notes and read around a ten short novels, write two papers, and his test involve writing long in class essays. But seriously, take this man. He'll make you fall in love with history.

Rothman is absolutely fantastic. He makes history really fun and interesting, but you have to go to class if you want to make a good grade. Lots of note taking. He is open to problems, and allows for reasonable paper extensions which is great. I'd take another class of his!

He is a great teacher and easy to listen to. You will learn a lot, but be ready to take lots of notes. He talks the entire 50 minutes. Tests require lots of preparation. You have to read a book every week and write about it. Your TA gives the grades and half o your overall grade is based on talking about the books every week. Be ready to work alot

He is extremely knowledgeable, he truly knows his material. Lectures aren't mandatory unless you want a good grade. All the in class essays are based on lecture notes so you need to go. His lectures are all talking so be ready to write. He is always willing to talk after class if you have any questions. Hes pretty funny and makes it relatively fun.
