Comment:
Judy is very knowledgable and passionate about what she teaches. Some of the readings were a bit tough but she goes over everything in class and has great slides. The readings were interesting because they were relevant to current events, and so were also easy to talk about in class discussion.

Comment:
I think Judy Segal is a very knowledgeable prof and tries to engage the class. Unfortunately, she assigns way too many lengthy and dry articles that the material becomes convoluted and confusing. This class is more a research course than an English course. Wouldnt bother taking it for the time and effort.

Patient and fair. Interesting lectures, and fantastic in follow-up. The main points of the class are clearly laid out in her slideshows and the diverse readings are actually interesting. I wish I was able to take more of her classes but her lectures have helped me out more than once since. I like that most readings are easily found online free.

Judy is brilliant and clearly passionate about her field. Rhetoric has always been of interest to me, but, prior to taking her class, I hadn't considered rhetoric with regard to science and technology. She changed my perspectives on quite a few things, and I found her class pretty enlightening (the readings especially). She's a pretty easy marker.

Comment:
Dr Segal's Rhetoric class was super interesting. You'd probably get more out of the class if you actually do all the readings but you don't need to in order to do well. And she goes over all the important stuff in class anyway. She is very passionate about her subject and cares deeply how rhetoric is effecting the world today.

I came into university extremely interested in science and Dr. Segal completely changed my outlook and inspired a great interest in the rhetoric of health and medicine, English as a discipline and narrative medicine. My 2 favourite courses at UBC!

Judy captured my heart with her wit, knowledge and patience. She uses specific examples that are easy to follow and usually pretty cute and funny. The assignments and presentation are a breeze if you just read the readings. Overall, this class inspired me to become more articulate when I speak and engage in multiple discourses outside of myfield.

I found Judy's lectures to be long and somewhat dull, but the readings are very interesting and unlike anything I've ever read before. She's an easy marker and it's not difficult to get a good grade with her.

Amazing prof, very happy I took her class. Judy is a brilliant mind, and her teaching and class will stay with me throughout my life. Lectures on the long side, + dry at times. There is a lot of reading for this class (the reading is super interesting, and my fav part), one group project, midterm, final and a paper. No textbook. Must take class!

I really hated having her as a professor. Stay away from this class unless you're already full of rhetorical knowledge. She is NOT helpful and cannot come down at your level and explain things in simplified manners. She made me feel really stupid all the time.

I actually really enjoyed this course, was less interested in the articles but as someone who was terrified of reading Plato and Aristotle again (Philosophy, run away!) this was a much better experience. She's funny, a little quirky, and good at explaining and re-explaining odd terms in the readings. Class gets a bit dull, but it IS Rhetoric.

Professor Segal is clear, inspiring and perpetually well-dressed. I entered this class viewing rhetoric as a drudge requisite for my degree; I left keen to learn more ? and wishing UBC had more rhetoric profs! (i.e. more than, er, one.) I've signed up for her honours theory seminar this coming term. Brilliant woman.

I took Rhetoric with Dr. Segal years ago. I admit I fell behind during second term, but she was a fair and at that time compassionate professor, looking back. I wrote a scathing report card because of a bit of confused religious zeal on my part. I apologize for every word. It was uncalled for. I wish her the best.

The material of the course is a bit dry so it would be nice to have a prof spice it up a bit... unfortunately this prof does not. While she is a sweet woman and does show a lot of interest in the subject matter her lectures are very boring and she does not engage with the students. She talks and talks and talks and makes you very sleeeeepy...

She's very interested in everything to do with rhetoric and communicates that excitement during lectures. Not a hard marker at all, even gives out previous exams to help you(and often reuses questions from them). She's also generally nice and friendly.
