Prof Murphy is amazing! I took an online class with her SUMMER16 & it was my first time taking an online class not going to lie, I was so terrified, but she had everything super organized & easy to access. I had no trouble with the online aspect of the class. You are going to have to do quite a bit of reading and writing, but you will be fine!!

Took this as a dynamic 7, which meant I had no life for 7 weeks. Reading 2 textbooks was extreme, and the blog entries often spanned over 20 Word doc pages (single spaced) in length. While my life was miserable, I did feel I got my money's worth in tuition for this one. She is CRYSTAL clear in expectations, but prepare to give up your weekends.

First off, be a hangout leader! It is extra credit! This class was four weeks, and took a lot of time, but it was so worth it. If you are a hangout leader then you don't have to do either the final or the final paper. Weekly video chats are required but they weren't as bad as expected. Highly recommend this course, especially bio majors!

Took this course in 4 weeks during the summer. It was a decent amount of work since it is a writing class, but the topics were very interesting and it wasn't hard at all. 2 Blogs due every week(read the chapter and analyze a section), final exam and a paper.

This was my third online class-the first with Professor Murphy. The subject material was very interesting to me as a nursing student, but the class required much more work than my other courses. This was also my first online class that was interactive with video chats, but I did find them beneficial. Professor Murphy was always willing to help!

I took a class with Murphy before and felt so-so about the experience. but,I felt like in her Sartre seminar her intelligence, lucidity, expertise shone through.on the fence about her student presentation model. assigns large readings that require more time to complete and digest.very open, very approachable. plays to lowest denominator at times.

I am a business student, not a philosophy student and I enjoyed this course. I took this course online and really like the set up.A quiz and blog due each Sunday along with a midterm paper and final paper.Very clear teacher and people on this site aren't giving her enough credit. You do the assignment and answer her questions, you get a good grade.

She gave multiple choice quizzes in an analytic philosophy class.Quizzes where poorly written and didn't provide for a practical application of knowledge yet worth 50% of grade!I felt she deferred to sloppy class discussion instead of providing a deeper elucidation of difficult texts. If your serious about philosophy she may not be the best for you.

Don't take this class if you are not gung-ho about women's studies and/or philosophy. Its an enormous amount of working for a halfway decent grade. DO NOT TAKE AN ONLINE COURSE WITH THIS TEACHER. She's an interesting and intelligent person, but unless this is your major area, find another way to fill your philosophy requirement.

Professor Murphy's class was the class that inspired me to choose the Women and Gender Studies minor. She's personable, very knowledgeable, and more than easy to work with. I loved both her and the class.

Awesome professor! She is very accomplished in her field and I agree with others that she is a brilliant woman. She might seem a little impersonal, but if you try talk to her she is the nicest person. She is incredibly smart and logical... loved her!

One of my favorite teachers; smart, on-topic, humorous, and stimulates thought. As a business major, I found this to be one of the best elective classes I've taken, and all due to the excellent instruction. Instead of lectures, she forced conversation within the classroom, which led to great dialogue. If available, try Professor Murphy!

One of my top 3 favorite teachers so far. Didn't find her to be biased or intolerant of opinions as long as those opinions were logical.

Reading these comments, I wonder if I didn't have a different professor. I LOVED her teaching and grading style. I got a huge amount out of the class and made a point of never missing one. Great discussions, no papers, what more could one want?

Sex, Gender, & Society sounded interesting but she made it so boring!!!! For the first half of the semester she went on rants comparing modern society standards to the bible...it was pointless.

this teacher was horrible. she never handed back the tests so you never knew what you got wrong, then she would put old questions on new tests and you would write the same wrong answer down. She wasn't very personal and her class was boring and a waste of time I worked three times as hard in this class and I ended up with only a C.

Thought this class was awesome. No paper, only multiple choice tests. Great discussions and quite receptive of different opinions, as long as you could back it up. Very reccommended, especially for people who don't like writing papers.

Julien is brilliant and quite amusing. I was worried about the class participation piece of my grade b/c I am shy, but she counted my participation in the small groups. There is a lot of reading but I find it refreshing when I find a USM professor with expectations. Her paper assignments are short, which is nice if you like being concise.

Prof. Murphy is helpful and makes the class interesting. Take a lot of notes and do the readings and you will be fine. She grades differently on a point scale but she offers extra credit and is a fair grader.
