Mr. Askins gives a list of about 10 books that will be read in the semester. My class read a book that we did not like, and he let us pick our next book. There is a lot of reading, and a journal due every class, but if you do the work you will be fine. He grades you on how well you understand the books, not how well you write.

Dr. Askins is an interesting man, he talks a lot during class time but it all generally relates back to the books being read. Theres a 225 word paper due once a week but as long as you read you will get the easiest A. Hes a cool dude overall, i specifically took another one of his english lectures

Extremely rude, will grade based on the length not details, will lower your grade if you try to ask about it, talks about his life more than the actual books, very sexist, gossips about students in his blog, and makes you read so much that you probably wont have time for other classes. FIND ANOTHER PROFESSOR!!! He will drain your love for reading!

Dr. Askins is an unusual guy. He tends to talk about sex and females a lot. If you do not read the books, you will have a hard time passing his class. Also, he knows when you are trying to pack your paper and you won't like the grade outcome. But he is a funny guy and easy to get along with.

You read between 8-10 books, reading more than half the book between classes. You are assigned a pop-quiz after each reading as well as writing a journal due once a week. Basically, you sit a listen to him speak and most of the time it's not even about the book. Arrogant and loves to hear himself talk. Also, you must attend class to pass!!

You have a lot of books to read, and each day after you read the assigned pages, you take a one question "surprise quiz". His classes were boring just because we sat and listened to him talk the whole time, and he gets off topic very easily.

This class is very reading oriented, some days you are required to read 1 book or a half of an entire novel between Tuesday and Thursday classes. There is a "surprise quiz" every class and it's either pass or fail and he asks a random question from the book. Dr. Askins is non understanding at all and is very arrogant. If I could give a 0 I would.

If you do your assignments and show up, you'll enjoy it. He explains all the readings and teaches you by example how to interpret literature, and a lot of the lectures he makes about readings are inspirational and thought-provoking. He's also crazy and interesting. Fun class if you enjoy literature

Most of the class was there purely for a gen ed requirement. Very offensive humor. Shares more of his life experiences that do NOT relate to the book than anything. Slightly easy grader

Easy class, but not worth it. If you are sensitive he will destroy your self esteem. Makes jokes all the time and then yells at you for laughing. Not worth it

Askins is useless as a teacher. He talks mostly about his personal experiences and very rarely discusses anything of depth of the literature. His class is super easy. You have quizzes and short journals every day and a writing prompt for the midterm and a final paper. Not a very harsh grader. Don't take if you're easily offended or want to learn.

Professor Askins is a good professor... but he's also very abrasive. I didn't know what to expect from him most of the time. He expects us to write 225-word papers every day (when the rest of us have classes) and he talks constantly about his own life. I am dropping his class because I don't know what to expect from him.

Amazing professor. Really knows what he's talking about. He has an obscure sense of humor, but if you can understand that he's not being mean, just being funny, you're fine. You have to do the readings to pass the quizzes, but the quizzes and journals aren't hard. If you do what you're supposed to, it's an easy A.

Dr. Askins does a good job at humiliating students when they are asking a questions. A girl sat next to me that was in a sorority and he asked her if her non-smiling face was because one of her "sisters" got mad at her.. He talks about things that are not related to class, then expects you to know everything come test time.

I graduated in 2005 from Radford (miss it still 'til this day) and he was one of my favorite professors. I learned so much in that class and totally recommend him as a teacher. My fellow RU family, you must take one (or all) of his courses.

I am currently enrolled in Professor Askin's ENGL 310 Poetry Writing class and it has been above and beyond better than I expected. I'm not the poetry writing type, but his class is easy going, so reciting poetry is less stressful. He does sometimes like to poke fun at people's poetry, but it's all out of good fun.

Amazing. He goes off on hilarious tangents during class discussions that keep you interested. He's traveled extensively all over the world and has so much to teach everyone. He's so easy to relate with and as long as you're an easy going person that enjoys being open minded, he is the perfect professor for you. I can't say enough about him. 20/10

He is an extremely good teacher. If you do the assignments every week you should have no problem getting an A. Basically he gives a reading assignment every class and you have to write 250 words summarizing it, and you can almost always use sparknotes. Def a class worth taking. He was one of my favorite professors!
