One of the best I ever had. Took him for US and the Middle East. He wasn't biased, at least not in my class. He called the balls and strikes, and taught, every single class. He never wasted our time. He KNOWS his stuff, will challenge you, but only to make you grow, not to be draconian. He's excellent.

McCarthy is a good guy. He just has a very difficult lecture style for a GenEd course. He wrote his own textbook, so if you have trouble with the lectures the book probably won't help. That being said, reading the textbooks in full is the only way to do well in class. He is goofy and kind, but a unnecessarily difficult.

Awesome professor. Non-mandatory attendance, but when few people are there he checks off who is in class. He has two books listed, but you don't need to purchase them. Attend class, the lecture slides are just basic outlines. Write down everything he says, that's the material that is really testable. Gives three tests which are the only grades.

He just talks in class, he uses powerpoint some but isn't specific about what is going to be on the exam. You can tell he really knows what he's talking about, it seems like he expects you to already know as much as him. I liked him and he was kind of funny but it was a difficult class, especially since it had nothing to do with my major.

There are only 3 tests, those are your only grades for the classes. You dont have to show up he posts everything online, but what he says in class is good to take notes on because it helps prepare you for the tests. I didnt use the books, I googled what he told us to read about. He's kind of funny in an awkward way but he's adorable and likable.

Good guy! Try to go to every single lecture. Pretty interesting and sometimes humorous. One time, I forgot that there was an exam that day. Pleaded with him and he gave me a make-up essay that ensured that I wouldn't have to drop the class. Study the online notes or make your outline. it works well for tests. Pretty chill guy

Very knowledgeable and organized. Changed my whole view about a lot of things that has been told wrongly by Western media, about Middle Eastern history.

He is a very smart person but can sometimes be dull. He only has 3 grades and they're all tests so you need to do well on them. Make sure you read the required sections before each test. Both textbooks are required to pass the class. He doesn't use blackboard except for uploading powerpoints so you need to be able to calculate your grade.

McCarthy does not have an attendance requirement. Just show up for the tests. Keep in mind that your test grades are your only grades in the class and he doesn't put the test dates in your syllabus so show up at least once a week just to see where they're at in the content. Read the book if you don't attend lecture.

He is an awesome professor who knows so much about history, he even wrote one of the textbooks. He makes the lectures interesting by throwing in personal experience from the places he's traveled. Even though attendance isn't mandatory, the powerpoints are just his talking points, so if you don't go to class, read the book.

McCarthy is very knowledgeable when it comes to the Middle East. I learned a lot from the class since it was taught from a different perspective than what you usually here. He covers a ton of material each class so try your best to be there. Take good notes, skim the books, participate and you'll be just fine.

McCarthy is one of my top three favorite teachers of all time. He is smart, loves when students speak up, even if they don't agree with him. McCarthy has spent his life traveling, writing, and learning. He has a very interesting perspective on history. I took his US-ME history class and it is cool because he was alive to see most of it happen.

McCarthy is a great professor and is one of the top history professors and UofL and spends more time traveling the world giving speechs than he does actually teaching. He is an expert on the information he teaches, having written several books and is a very interesting man. *I studied with Youtube, didnt buy any of the books required and got an A.

McCarthy is great! He is a really funny professor who makes learning history interesting. There are only three tests in the entire semester, but as long as you take good notes and read you'll do fine. This is definitely one of my favorite classes to go to.

I love this guy. I went into this class thinking I was going to hate it just like all the other history classes I have taken but I actually got excited to attend this one. He gives his lectures through story telling of his time in Europe and actually makes history interesting and easy to remember. He does require a ton of reading(if you want an A).

we took 2 tests and a quiz. This class is very straight foward and I love that dates are not what he is interested in us memorizing. He also gives a good curve to make the class as fair as possible. You will not pass if you dont study but I study the week of each test and managed to get a B.

This man is brilliant. He really opened my eyes. He teaches students about the history of the MiddleEast and Ottoman Empire which is not known in mainstream history classes or the media. It just goes to show you how our secondary educaiton system in America is so biased against Turks and Muslims. He shows you the other side of the story. Take him!

He lets you out of class early most of the time. His class is boring and you need to take notes, because he lectures on material different than what is in the book. He knows a lot of what he is teaching about, but doesn't seem to really care. If you study and take notes, you should get an A.
