She is hard to reach outside of class (could never find her) but she is an amazing lecturer and environmentalist. Inspired me to switch majors. TA's do the grading/footwork but her lectures and the guest lecturers are AMAZING. Just study the notes and read the readings required for the test and its a beautiful, inspirational breeze.

Really interesting course. she knows what shes talking about, is very clear with expectations. the course has loads of office hours, although normally busy. No textbook, all free online readings. She has loads of little facts which make the course interesting. Material always relevant to what's happening in the world. Midterm, paper & final.

Perhaps one of the smartest women I know and an asset for UBC. She really knows her stuff and beyond. A good class for someone who is really interested in what she is teaching.Hard work, lots of reading and she can smell BS from a mile away so hard to cram for her essays or papers. Well worth it!

Awesome professor...one of my favourites. Karen is so knowledgeable and helpful if you see her outside of class. 412 is the BEST course ever. You learn sooooo much! In response to some comments, I don't think that Karen is actually condescending, I think that she just has a greater vernacular than most. Overall, great course, great professor!

Karen is unfriendly & condescending to students. Seems only in it for tenure, not an interest in teaching. Impossible to understand how things are marked - never seemed fair (& I didn't do that badly). Hated this course despite liking the subject.

Incredibly knowledgable professor. Her lectures are interesting and insightful and promote critical thinking. Also, despite some of the other comments on this site, I found her to be approachable and helpful.

the way she talks can make you quite sleepy at times and makes the lectures seem so long. 40% fail for the midterm and had to scale up 14% so more of the class passed

40% fail rate on the midterm and she blamed in on class attendance - dont think so went to every class. She's condescending and simply unpleasant. Not approachable and unclear is what she wants.

I took the Water Management seminar course from Karen and I thought it was an extremely well organized, fun class! It was a small group of us so there was lots of good discussions and Karen taught us lots of really useful methods for debates and dialogs and about the really important water issues. She really knows her stuff. Highly recommended!

Environmental awareness is in trouble if it's going to continue to be delivered in a taunting, condescending fashion.

Horrible professor, can't figure out that an answer may be correct even if it isn't in her notes. Why assign readings if you won't accept answers from them? Waste of time.... get off your high horse.

I dont' know if it's my problem. But i find it hard to understand the lectures. The course itself is well-organize in the sense that all lecture notes are up on the website. The guest lectures are interesting though :)

Her teaching is really problematic. This professor should undergo teaching seminar to It's painful to listen to her lectures. She can't convey ideas clearly. The markings are unfair and unreasonable. Average for the paper is 71! With two TAs, it takes forever to get your marks. Worst Prof.

Professor Bakker definitely knows her stuff and is very passionate about her job. Classes are very informative and easy to follow. She challenges students to think critically and work hard to understand many views on environmental studies.

She does come off as a snob, however, she really is nice in person. It is SO true about her vocabulary though...she needs to make her discussions a little more simplistic, like the material is.
