It's an absolute shame Professor Zender is retiring. By far the best English professor I had, he knows so much about Faulkner and the novels that he limits the number read in the class. Deep level of discussion about the novel, but always wanting comments and questions. Two essays, a midterm, and a final: nothing bad. Fair grader. GREAT professor!

Fantastic teacher! Absolutely KNOWS his Faulkner. So many cool antecdotes, lots of personal stories of his own history as it relates to segregation, etc. He's an older (& wiser!) professor and so charming. Definitely take his Faulkner or any other class from him...he's very impressive & it's fun to listen to his lectures. Learned tons, fair grader.

Amazing professor, very knowledgeable about Faulkner. His lectures were so interesting and full of information that I was afraid (and didn't want) to miss one! And it helps that Zender is a very nice, helpful professor who encourages coming to his office hours and does his best to make students understand Faulkner, which isn't easy. Loved him!

Zender is a great teacher. I made a point of not missing his class, even at 9am on a Friday. He lets you turn in one paper a whole week late, he grades fairly. He's super friendly inside and outside of class and lets others weigh in on the discussions.

He's a cool professor. Very knowledgable and passionate about the literature. Approachable and actually remembers my name even though I never spoke in class. Very fair grader-giving an option of turning one paper a week late.

Zender knows his stuff. A little vague on grading standards though paper topics are very flexible. Take home final and course centered around canonical texts. Easy B, class optional, but Zender is a great teacher so skip it at your own intellectual risk.

Knows his material eight ways to Sunday. Careful reader. Really brings out the nuances in a way that eschews formulaic readings. Great sense of humor and has plenty of fun anecdotes. Really is the archetype of the cool English professor who teaches simply cause he loves to read and talk books. A+

I really enjoy Zender's class! This is the second class I've taken with him (117b is the other), and if you actually listen during lecture, you realize how knowledgeable he is about all of the texts he teachers. He's got great insight and I love listening to what he has to say.

If you EVER get a chance to take his Faulkner class, DO IT. Faulkner's are are VERY difficult books, and he knows them inside, outside, roundside, upside, and downside. One of the most organized/clear profs you'll find.

Didn't anyone else find this class extremely dull? Anyhow, as someone else said already, a really nice old man. If you can stay awake through the lectures and read the assignments, tests aren't bad. Definitely a low work load.
