Easily one of my favorite professors at W&L. He loves to talk but also allows students to have some incredibly interesting discussions. His Southern Lit class was awesome and I would recommend it to anyone. Not the easiest grader but if you put in the work and express interest he is so helpful. Very approachable and really cares about his students.

Makes you defend your comments in class even if you don't think that they need to be expanded on. He tries to force his opinions on you and at times makes the rest of the class feel uncomfortable when doing so. Definitely uses students as an example which is really unnecessary. Don't take this class unless you're willing to keep your mouth shut.

YOu have to pretend to believe in his socialist ideas and always agree his way of being skeptical about everything. Really easy B, but a hard A.

Professor Smout doesn't get the credit he deserves. He likes to talk but he cares a lot about his students and will help you with anything - all you have to do is ask. He is one of the most knowledgeable professors I have had at W&L and I would recommend taking his class.

He thrives when he has fewer students. He really cares bout students and has a quirky yet effective teaching style. If you put in the effort so does he.

Comment:
While Professor Smout is intelligent and well read, I did not like the class at all. He talks incessantly (repeating himself multiple times and always insisting on the last word), makes examples out of students, and takes student comments out of context. I would recommend only taking his class as a last resort. He is, however, a fairly easy grader.

Yeah, hes a pretty nice guy and has the ability to host a very interesting class. The material assigned are all good reads. yet, upon recieving back a graded rough draft, DO NOT rely solely on his advice to improve you paper. Will leave something alone on rough draft then mark it off on final draft.

I struggled in this class. Its a huge workload. He's not terribly hard when it comes to grading, if you've kept up with the workload (which did I mention is insane?0

Odd little man who loves to make a class discussion (and is very good at doing so), and then INSISTING on having the last word, even if it is repeating ver batum the last sentance out of the mought of a student. Smout, if you read this, this is rather insulting... dont do it, your students aresmart

Very good perspective on Southern Lit. Strange because he's an Idahoan Morman. Studied under Louis Rubin. Also helps with personal problems.
