Absolutely loved this class: I loved Slevin, interesting material, and I'm now majoring in sociology. Book material is crucial because the tests are incredibly difficult -- you have to study to do well. But it's still so great to go to class and hear Slevin's awesome anecdotes; it makes mandatory attendance not bad at all. Great intro lecture.

I LOVE HER! It's a testament to her teaching that she can make the chapter on Methods fun and interesting. We went over the exact same material in another class and I was bored out of my mind, but I was totally captivated when Slevin explained it. Plus, she's kind of my hero. TAKE HER!!!!!!

Slevin is interesting and engaging but very one-sided; she is a self-professed liberal feminist and her lectures definitely follow that line. The class is always fun and entertaining to go to, attendence is mandatory and totally worth it, but expect to study between 10-20 hours per test if you want a decent grade.

Considering I dislike the subject with a burning passion, Slevin is still an excellent teacher. She'll go out of her way to help you. However, don't let the fact that the test are multiple choice confuse you. They are very difficult. She will ask trivial questions and include vocabulary terms that all seem to mean the exact same thing. Take her.

You'll think "there's no way she'll give 4 to 5 multiple choice questions on each test that require you to exactly know the value of an obscure statistic, because that would be useless regurgitation, a waste of everyone's time and money, and would be irresponsible of her as a person with a doctorate". But she will, don't worry.

Prof. Slevin is my role model. She is one of the most extraordinary people I have encountered, and she has the greatest stories. She's a very dynamic, engaging lecturer and makes class a lot of fun. It is my goal to take a class with her again before I graduate.

Take this class! She's a wonderful professor and extremely helpful. She's very knowledgeable. It's a pretty easy class. There are three tests and a final all multiple choice/ true false. Study the Readings and book for her tests. You'll want to go to class every day.

Great teacher!!! Very dynamic, engaging. Overall, recommend her. Probably one of the best teachers in her campus and dept. Class composed of 3 tests. Most likely to get a B of some sort in the class, A if you work harder (People who do get A's are told that they study about 12 hours before test.) If you work hard, you'll get what you deserve.

I loved this class! It was my lowest grade of the semester, but she is a GREAT professor. READ YOUR BOOK. Lectures are often funny and really enjoyable. Talk to her during office hours- she likes knowing that you aren't just a face in her class. Study everything-twice for her exam. Enjoy her Irish accent and all she has to offer as a sociologist!

It was one of those classes where I couldn't get an A as hard as I tried - even if I studied for 15 hours for the exam, even if I read all the material, even if I went to every class (which you had to do if the clickers were working). She loves her stuff and everying is interesting. Fun class. Good to take for your major or a GER.

Great Professor with a high level of interest in the topic. Go to class, take notes, and read every word of the texts. If you study all of the material and keep faithful to the readings, it shouldn't be hard to get a good grade.

I took the class for the GER, but it ended up being my favorite of the semester. Slevin is a thought-provoking lecturer and most of the topics covered are fairly interesting. It's easy to swing a B in the class, but harder to make an A. Come to class (she uses a clicker) and read the book before the exams and you should be fine.

This class is unnecessarily hard for something that should be easy. Read the book twice. Memorize statistics. Take notes. It's not worth it for the little you learn.

If I had never stepped out of my room and realized that there were other people in the world, then this class probably would still have been the most boring class I'd ever been in! It's an easy class, but I would not recommend taking it if you believe that there are forces in the world aside from social ones. If you do, this course is frustrating.

By far one of the best professors I've had at WM! She is the reason I decided to minor in Sociology. Made an impact in the way I think about society. 3 MC exams and it's important to read the book (but it's interesting!). Attendance taken through clicker questions. Not an easy A, but worth the work. Very helpful/friendly during office hours.

Slevin is awesome! What a great woman. Her stories are entertaining and engaging, and she's really helpful. Tests aren't bad at all if you do your reading, but you have to read because tests will sometimes include tricky figures from the texts. She really makes the class interesting and makes the students want to come to class.

Awesome teacher! Prof Slevin really knows her stuff. She is down to earth, very approachable, and helpful. The class is challenging--you must engage yourself in the lessons, and attendance is crucial. There are no easy A's, but it is possible--I received an A- and I am a minority (African American from the inner city). Take a class with her.
