There are assigned readings and a writing assignment due before every class. Decent class but wouldn't take if you're not into writing a lot.

Comment:
He has a very interesting teaching style which is heavily discussion based and utilizes consistent 200 word responses to literature. The class is essentially a literature class in which you also learn about jewish culture and writers. He is a very smart man who knows very much about the subject matter, although he does struggle with discussions.

I feel like Professor Frieden is a nice guy but I would never want to take a class with him again. He doesn't believe in grades, no one had any idea how they were doing until final grades were out. When he was teaching he would jump all over the place from subject to subject. He was giving out lots of information, but lots of it was not relevant.

If you hate test taking, you'll love the class. (Homework: read a short story and write two paragraphs a day for class. Testing: a midterm for 10% and no final.) As far as the professor goes, he's one of my favorites. He listens to you, is passionate about the topic, and he doesn't lecture- he shares ideas with the class and values participation.

He is a really nice guy but has difficulty teaching the class. His goal is to make it a discussion class but does not succeed which creates lots of awkward silences. The readings are very easy. The class is very easy. If you need an easy humanities take this. The only issue is he takes attendance but thats it.

He is remarkable: was Elie Wiesel's TA. Very willing to give extensive notes on your drafts and really enjoys the topics he teaches. Brilliant! I greatly admire him as a scholar and professor. You must participate to get the full benefits however.

Brilliant but awkward man. The student must be involved and engaged to get the most from Frieden. Such will be greatly rewarded as the texts open wide. I learned more about reading/writing in his judaic lit class than I had in 3 years of Eng. Worth noting: I ain't Jewish.
