Comment:
This course is heavily based on D3, but he teaches nothing about that at all. Lectures are mostly showing examples, and he keeps saying "you can do this after taking this course" and teach nothing. To do projects, you have to study tutorials by yourself. Do not take this course, to save you from 10 weeks of nonsense, and to save him from teaching.

Comment:
Lectures are too surface level and provide no meaningful insight into what makes a good data visualization. Too much time is spent on past student examples. Too much focus on d3 for homeworks and projects. Assignments aren't difficult but take a lot of time because of the ridiculous reqs that contradict "good" design (ie forced # of different viz).

Terrible lecturer, do not take. The class is basically him telling you "my past students did this" "my past students are recognized for this" "you can do this too". He even said in class "the point of this class isn't to learn d3js its to learn design" however this class was not a design class and 80 percent of the grade is d3.

I gave a similar comment about professor Ma a few weeks ago, as the one left on 3/9/16, but was then immediately deleted. What is going on here? If you site is truly for students, stop being influenced by the teacher who is being reviewed. Prof. Ma is a bad teacher who doesn't care about students, period.

Comment:
Professor Ma is the worst lecturer I have ever had. He does not come to the lectures well prepared, keeps talking about the same thing over all over, and crams his lecture with examples. If he does not take attendance, no one would go to his class. I am deeply sorry for him that he has to teach, also his students, since they have to listen to him.

Took this class 2 years ago. He was okay. The subject is not that interesting but he tried to get us engaged and encourged us to ask questions. I found him helpful every time I went to his office horus. I felt very comfortable speaking to him and asking questions. His exams seemed fair.

horrible teacher. his lectures were good in the beginning of the quarter and then he started to just ramble. The book was the only thing that got me thorough the class. You could just read the book and never go to lecture with this guy.

Not bad if you READ THE BOOK, but not great. Class examples helpful, sometimes. Office hours not helpful at all. Quizzes were kind of random. His tests are the kind where you *think* you do well, but when you get them back... it's a different story.

Lecture style is sometimes hard to follow. No book, only research papers.
