i took Micro&Asian Econ with Westphal.True,he's hard in Micro and doesn't always prepare his work,but through his exams etc,I learnt the material much more thoroughly than i would otherise.In Asian Econ,he doesn't maintain the same personality&is actually an amazing professor.He's also v helpful&Nice if you bother to seek him out outside of class.

I really like Westphal, but I've heard that he deliberately tries to be off-putting in this class. He does make mistakes at the board (would it kill him to write down a derivation in advance?), and his tests are murder. However, in retrospect, I learned a lot more than I thought I was learning at the time.

Westphal is an absolutely horrible person. Despite dull and often incorrect lecture, he seems to take pleasure in students' failure, and certainly doesn't exert himself to see that thhey succeed. I don't know why he's a professor, but it's not for the love of teaching. He'll do anything to beat you down.

Westphal in Ec 11 = terrible pedagogy. Dull. Bad. I took the class purely to learn the subject. Did fine, but definitely not worth the hype, stress, or boredom. He is fine one on one, a nice person, and I've heard his upper level smaller courses are quite good. He should really get cited by the deans, though, and put in teaching re-boot camp.

Professor Westphal is rude and intimidating to students. His lectures always run over time. He gets mixed up about the material (drawing curves wrong, etc.) to further confuse his already horrible lectures.

This was one of the hardest classes at Swat and Westphal derives pleasure from terrifying micro students. But I learned more from him than I did my other three classes combined that term. He can be very helpful, just don't let him intimidate you.

Westphal is, without question, the most arrogant professor at Swat. He probably deserves to be, though, because he knows his stuff. If you don't allow him to intimidate you, he's quite helpful.

An over-reliance on weekly quizes and a standardized grading system, coupled with a massive lecture made this perhaps the worst economics class offered. No papers, and the weekly quizes just test if you did the reading, not really if you mastered it.

This was a challenging course, but Professor Westphal taught it very effectively, and I learned a LOT about economics. He is an engaging and clear lecturer. The only minus is that his demeanor can be a bit intimidating.
