I love Liz- super funny but able to talk about intellectual topics at the same time. You can tell she really cares about her students.

My favorite professor at W&M (which is saying something). "Lectures" were insightful, passionate, nuanced--basically every good adjective fits. Class discussions were thoughtfully-led, and will stretch you. Professor Barnes encouraged us to engage intellectually and emotionally with Hemingway, and I'm a better thinker/person because of it.

I like her as a person but not as a teacher. I found the writing assignments to be frustrating and un-clear. But then again English is my worst subject.

Awesome professor. Chill and positive atmosphere but discussions were substantive and engaging. Turned out Jane Austen wasn't really my thing but not Prof. Barnes fault.

Hemingway was an AMAZING class. Barnes is an excellent professor- extremely interesting, funny, friendly, and leads very stimulating and thoughtful discussions. Always well prepared for class. It is very important to stay current on the sometimes heavy readings, but its fun reading. Would definitely take another Barnes class!

Fantastic professor. I'm taking a higher-level class with her next semester simply to take another class with her. If you're not an English major, take Hemingway for the GER. If you are an English major, take Hemingway for the GER, and then take Barnes again.

I found Barnes a little intimidating, but she's a great teacher. Don't worry if she gets quiet after you talk; she's not judging you, she's thinking about what you said. Let us bring cookies to class every week, good discussion, heavy reading. Enjoyable, but not my favorite class here. Melville is a difficult author, but she teaches him well.

Best class I've taken at W&M so far. I just took it for the GER, and ended up loving the class and Hemingway. Barnes is a tough grader, but the class is fun and you will learn a LOT. Make sure you participate whether you've done the readings or not, but in order to pass the exams you HAVE to have taken good notes and at least skimmed the books.

Barnes is nothing short of brilliant. Her classes are difficult and she does challenge you to think, but you should love every minute of it. I didn't like Melville much before I took her class, but now he's one of my favorite authors. Along with Donaldson, Putzi, and Dawson, she is among the best American Lit professors in the department.

Hemingway: The Man and the Myth is an interesting course but you really have to keep up with the reading if you want an A. It becomes a lot to catch up on fast. Barnes is a decent teacher but a hardcore feminist. Don't say anything that can be misconstrued as chauvinistic, she'll tear you a new one. Use semicolons but never the word utilize.
