By far the worst class I've ever taken. She is vague and unclear about expectations. There is no clear grading rubric and 80% of grade comes from two exams. Readings are really long and aren't related to lecture although they are used heavily for exam questions. She missed class more than 50% of the time! The worst!!

This was honestly the worst class that I have ever taken. Appleton is disorganized and rude. There is tons of reading, that while a bit helpful, is rather outdated. Readings were never discussed in class, yet tests only covered material in articles that we were assigned. She assigns a ton of reading, making it difficult to keep up.

Hands down the worst class I've ever had. Yes, the material is interesting and you will probably learn a lot. However, the class is extremely disorganized and so is the professor. The material and the professor are outdated. We got our first real grades back for the class 2 DAYS before the last day of class. Ridiculous.

A lot of people in my class didn't like her, and yes, her class was the hardest class I have ever taken (and Im a senior), but she is such a good teacher. She is passionate and doesn't hand anything over. You have to work for your grade and show comprehension. She doesn't get enough credit. One of the best classes Ive taken here at Central

I learned so much in this class! If you do all the reading you will do well. It may seem impossible, but she just likes to act strict and scary. You get the grade you deserve.

Dr. Appleton's class was super interesting, by far the best class ive ever taken. It was alot of reading and the tests and quizzes were pretty hard (hour long essay questions), but if you keep up with the reading and can demonstrate this with your test answers, she will give you a good grade.

She doesn't provide study guides or easy answers--because she is teaching you to figure out what it important on your own. Don't be intimidated by her demeanor or work load. She's trying to separate the people who are really passionate about learning from those trying to get an easy A. Once you prove your passion for Sociology, she shows hers.

Assigned reading were about 15 pages each night BUT she said we would never talk about them in class-- BUT the exams were over the readings themselves. No outline for help. Highly advise not taking her. She like to lecture but nothing really applies to the reading.

You have to come to class to get at least a C in the class. She doesn't post anything online, doesn't give study guides, doesn't tell you what will be on exams, lots of reading material, and is the hardest grader I have ever seen! She is a sweet woman once you understand her sarcastic sense of humor.

Comment:
The quantity of assigned reading was entirely disproportional to its applicability to class discussion. The reading, therefore, made the class entirely intolerable, where otherwise her pontification would otherwise have sufficed. Lastly, she would ask vexing questions and be upset when no one understood the intended inquiry.

Her classes are HARD. lots of reading and her syllabus/course outline is what she tells us to look at when we want help for what may be on exams, which REALLY isn't helpful. everyone in the class is frustrated as hell with her.

Appleton's courses are indeed difficult, but she is by far the best professor in the soc dept. She wants students to engage in thoughtful conversation, to be challenged, and to learn. If students could get past being lazy - relying on "easy professors" - and actually put some effort into their work, then they would learn a lot from her.
